Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Director of Inclusive Career Development position. The Director of Inclusive Career Development is a full-time, year-round position, the salary grade for this position starts at $81,332, actual salary will be commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Director of Inclusive Career Development is the strategic lead on the career community and affinity-based advising and programming practices in the Loeb Center. The Director is a member of the Loeb Center leadership team, provides counsel to the Executive Director on center operations and a broad range of policies and strategic decisions. The Director manages a team of industry-specialist career advisors (career communities), serves as a generalist career advisor, and ensures that diversity, equity and inclusion practices and mindsets are integrated into the design and delivery of the center's core advising services.
The Director develops and directs career development initiatives and content delivered by the Loeb Center, ensuring that a range of student affinities, including Black and Indigenous students of color, Latinx and AAPI students, LGBTQ+ students, first generation and/or low-income students, international students and veterans, and students with disabilities are equitably supported. The Director develops communication channels with and serves as a liaison to various student resource organizations and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as some assigned academic departments. The Director serves as a project manager on various collaborative initiatives as assigned.
Summary of Responsibilities
Program Development and Supervision
- Sets vision and long-term goals for a comprehensive, affinity-based approach to supporting the career development of Amherst's highly diverse community of students
- Along with the other members of the leadership team, conducts research and analysis, develops insights, and proposes plans and policies to increase access, equity and inclusion through leveraging Loeb Center resources and programs
- Supervises, coaches and develops a collaborative team of career advisors across multiple industry specialty areas
- Develops goals, work plans and assessment strategies that deepen student access, equitable opportunity and inclusive support in the Loeb Center; allocates work and supervises implementation across the advising team
- Develops a sustainable strategy and infrastructure for connecting alumni to students in meaningful ways along both career interest and affinity-based lines to enhance career development
- Complementing the Director of Early Career Exploration, serves as a thought leader and practitioner regarding the Loeb Center's support for juniors, seniors and early alumni
- As a member the Loeb Center leadership team, works to align goals, strategies and activities with other Loeb Center priorities and cross-departmental strategies
- Exercises authority on strategy, judgment, and policy related to the Loeb organizational vision; represents and communicates the direction, goals and decisions set by the Executive Director and the Loeb Center leadership team
Project Management and Supervision
- Directs annual program planning and implementation cycle of key career development initiatives delivered by the advising team, including the Alumni-in-Residence program, career exploration treks, and other scaled group efforts
- Coordinates project management efforts closely with operational staff (communications, marketing, data and reporting)
- Effectively supervises a diverse team, working intentionally towards an inclusive culture
- Collaborates with Alumni & Parent Programs and other stakeholders on strategies, events and opportunities for alumni-student engagement and mentorship that promote career education
Career Education, Advising, and Student Preparation
- Counsels and advises a diverse set of students with regard to career exploration, job search, graduate school, and life skills development in individual and group sessions and telephone/e-mail consultations
- Educates students about proper networking protocol; reviews students resumes and cover letters; and teaches effective interviewing techniques
- Delivers career education presentations, trainings and special events to student groups
External Leadership
- Serves as a Loeb Center spokesperson with a range of stakeholders, including prospective students and families, alumni, and other campus departments, as needed
- Supports Loeb Center executive director in relationship management and strategic partnership with alumni advisory council; contributes expertise to council discussions, as needed
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum five years of related experience in a higher education setting
- Minimum three years of supervision and management experience
- Exceptional leadership, coaching and supervision skills
- Experience leading and developing diverse teams
- Excellent interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent project management skills
- Demonstrated competency working with diverse student identities
- Expertise in diversity, equity and inclusion
- Expertise in student and/or career development
- Experience in program design and development
- Excellent career advising, presentation and training skills
- Self-directed, outcome-oriented, and detail-oriented
- Success working both independently and collaboratively
- Occasional travel and evening/weekend work (student-facing workshops)
Preferred:
- Master's Degree in a relevant field
