Job Description:


GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Military & Veterans Services Navigator serves an advocate, advisor, and facilitator for helping to create a supportive and safe environment for military, veteran, and dependent students characterized by a strong commitment to equity and belonging. The Navigator will coordinate programs for prospective and current military-affiliated students that enhance understanding of financial aid and VA educational benefits as well as provide wrap-around support for admissions, financial aid, academic, career, and transfer. As the VA Certifying Official for the College, the Navigator will work closely with the Financial Aid Office to provide outreach and support for students using VA educational benefits. Additionally, the Navigator will promote the importance of financial aid and financial literacy in achieving educational and personal goals.

The Navigator will work closely with the offices of Enrollment Management, Financial Aid and SUCCESS to develop support mechanisms that help veteran and dependents achieve their educational goals. Focusing on addressing social determinants that may impede educational attainment, such as housing security, food security, employment, and behavioral health, the Navigator will use a solutions-focused approach to case management to provide wrap-around support services and develop plans for success. Working within the Student Wellness Office, the Navigator can help veteran students with managing stress, managing their wellness wheel, and help make referrals to clinicians. The Navigator will work with veterans to promote involvement with peer education and prevention programming with suicide and other mental health concerns facing them.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  1. Serve as a mobilizer and navigator to organize student and community support through interventions, referrals, and connecting to follow-up services on and off campus. This includes using intervention strategies to facilitate student behavior change and help to support academic success.
  2. Serve as Veterans' Affairs Certifying Official to all military, veteran and dependent students; verify enrollment status on weekly basis and updates Veterans Administration Regional Office; counsel students in G.I. benefit procedures; organize and conduct information workshops; serve as liaison to armed service recruiters from all branches; maintain Veterans Administration records.
  3. Use cross-cultural sensitivity and view student's predicament from multiple perspectives, and take thoughtful action to provide comprehensive, wrap-around case management to address the needs of military-affiliated students in the areas of admissions, financial aid, advising, and registration and wellness.
  4. Create a working alliance between the College, Student Wellness Office, Success Program, and community resources to address military, veteran and dependent student needs including behavioral health, social adjustment issues, trauma recovery, food insecurity, and housing insecurity.
  5. Develop and maintain a database of referral resources and community services for military, veteran and dependent students including on campus, Cape and Islands, and the greater Plymouth area.
  6. Participate in state, regional, and national professional development activities to ensure a complete understanding of federal and state regulations and remain current on continual changes to the federal and state aid programs.
  7. Assist Dean and Financial Aid with preparation of the VA catalog requirements.
  8. Assist in oversight of website and pertinent information pertaining to VA educational benefit requirements and regulations.
  9. Serve on the College's Student Behavioral Intervention Team. Regularly attend meetings and participate in training.
  10. Maintain a caseload of targeted advisees utilizing a holistic, case management approach to respond to the needs of each student.
  11. Serve as advisor to Military and Veteran Student Club.
  12. Assist Financial Aid Office and Enrollment Management with outreach to enhance understanding and knowledge of financial aid and veteran educational benefits.

Requirements:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, psychology, or a closely related field.
  2. Three years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in vocational/academic counseling, advising, career development/transitions and recruiting including development, implementation, and management of similar education programs.
  3. Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations including military, veterans and dependents, students of color and first-generation students.
  4. Understanding of VA educational benefits.
  5. Ability to examine a student's situation and goals from diverse/multiple perspectives to ensure appropriate resolution.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of case management systems and experience with referrals, documentation, and active follow-up.
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills, including both oral and written communications.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Veteran status.
  2. Knowledge of student development theory and problems/issues typically encountered by college students.
  3. Knowledge of behavioral health and wellness issues among military and veteran college students.
  4. Knowledge of VA educational benefits and navigating the VA system within a community college setting.
  5. Experience working with distressed individuals within a higher education or community setting.

Additional Information:


COMPENSATION: Full-time (12 months) MCCC/MTA Unit Position (Grade 4, Career Development/Veterans Affairs Counselor) with an annual salary range of $52,754 - $63,770; partially grant funded. Actual salary will be consistent with the MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program.
