Residential Commons Overview The Residential Commons program at Colgate seeks to infuse intellectual engagement and community development into the residential experience. All first-year and second-year students live in one of four Residential Commons, each with its own unique personality and characteristics, under the leadership of faculty and staff directors. Upper-level students maintain an affiliation with their respective Commons for the lifetime of their university attendance.. Through the Residential Commons program, Residential Life and the Dean of the College Division in partnership with faculty and the Dean of the Faculty Division, strive to provide students with a home away from home that is rich with opportunities for academic and social engagement and reflects the classroom rigor and sense of belonging students feel across the University.
Accountabilities:
Position OverviewThe Commons Residential Fellow (RF) works under the supervision of the Residential Commons faculty directors and area directors, and is responsible for the development and support of programmatic initiatives within a Residential Commons. This position is 30 hours per week, is for a one-year appointment, and is a live-in position.
The RF assists in building intellectually-engaging residential communities through interacting regularly with residents, other Residential Fellows, Community Leaders, members of the Commons Councils, and a variety of campus partners. The RF oversees and executes events, large and small, sponsored by the Residential Commons in a collaborative environment. The RF supports the development of a democratic, vibrant, inclusive, and healthy environment within the context of their living and learning communities.
Residential Fellows are also provided the opportunity to work up to ten hours / week with an academic department, or program or other campus life organization of their choice. This link to an academic department/program or campus organization provides opportunities for continued academic growth and preparation or professional development for the RF.
Programming & Assessment
- Assist with the planning, and coordinate the execution, of large and small -scale events within the Residential Commons.
- Recruit and co-advise the student Residential Commons programming council.
- Collaborate with other stakeholders within Colgate and the local community on program initiatives.
- Manage scheduling of program spaces within the Residential Commons buildings in consultation with the directors, using criteria for use of Residential Commons spaces established by the Residential Commons staff.
- Purchase program materials and supplies, track expenses, and submit expense reports, within specified budget guidelines.
- Oversee budget for large-scale, collaborative programs & events in collaboration with Residential Commons directors. Process and track invoices and oversee the Residential Commons budget in collaboration with the faculty and staff directors.
- Design, create, and distribute promotional materials for events, including social media graphics, posters, and email invitations.
Community Development & Engagement
- Manage, design, and distribute Residential Commons' communications with residents, including daily social media posts, weekly newsletters, and signage in buildings.
- Serve as a mentor by engaging regularly with residents.
- Serve as a role model to first and second year students around community standards, expectations and values.
Intellectual Connection
- Develop a partnership with an academic department/program (e.g., lab research, teaching assistant, etc.) or campus organization (e.g., COVE, Upstate Institute, Shaw Wellness, etc.) committing no more than 10 hours per week
- Promote, support and actively participate in faculty engagement in the residence halls.
- Promote an atmosphere within the Residential Commons that supports and encourages intellectual pursuits and academic engagement.
- Identify and assist residents with concerns that are barriers to academic success and make appropriate referrals to professionals as required.
- Serve as a positive role model in social and academic pursuits.
Core Departmental Responsibilities
- Provide direct operational support for the Residential Commons as a member of the Leadership Team.
- Attend and participate in weekly Residential Commons leadership meetings and other meetings are requested.
- Communicate and collaborate regularly with RFs from other Residential Commons.
- Create and complete regular reports as required by the Director of Residential Life and Residential Commons Directors.
- In collaboration with the Commons Directors, select, train, and supervise student interns responsible for oversight of the Residential Commons kitchens.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for the central Residential Commons offices, programs, and kitchens.
- Frequent evening and weekend commitments are expected.
- Other duties as assigned.
Professional Experience/Qualifications
Candidates must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills and be capable of creating and maintaining productive and collegial working relationships with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
Previous experience working as an undergraduate student in residential life or student programming.
A current, valid driver’s license, in accordance with the University’s Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Having access to a vehicle is strongly encouraged, but is not required.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree is required.
Other Information
- This is a part-time, 10-month, live-in position; it is a one-year appointment.
- Pay rate is $15.00 an hour with an expectation of 30 hours per week.
- Position begins August 1, 2023, and concludes on May 21, 2024.
- Room, partial board and health insurance are provided as the benefits package.
