The technical research writer/editor will work with the director of research communications and the other research communications writer/editors to support research storytelling across the Institute, as well as initiatives coming out of the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR).

The Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR) directs Georgia Tech's $1.37 billion portfolio of research, development, and sponsored activities. This includes leadership of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), the Enterprise Innovation Institute, nine interdisciplinary research institutes (IRIs) plus research centers, and related research administrative support units: commercialization, corporate engagement, research development and operations, and research administration.

Georgia Tech routinely ranks among the top U.S. universities in volume of research conducted, and in 2023, Tech is ranked No. 17 among academic institutions across the U.S. in research and development expenditures in the Higher Education Research and Development Survey by the National Science Foundation. Tech was also ranked No. 1 among universities without a medical school a major accomplishment, as medical schools account for a quarter of all research expenditures nationally.

Job Summary

Writes and edits technical news stories summarizing scientific research and related topics. Responsible for identifying news releases, feature stories, and other content about the research critical to Georgia Tech's mission to educate, serve and improve the human condition.

This position will interact on a regular basis with: Faculty, students, research communications directors and IRI program managers, GTRI communicators

This position typically will advise and counsel: Research communicators across campus, including Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI)

This position will supervise: NA

This is a hybrid role.

Responsibilities
Job Duty 1 - Write, edit, and proof research news content from around campus, including GTRI which promotes Georgia Tech research and adheres to established style and layout

Job Duty 2 - Verify technical details with research personnel and fellow communicators

Job Duty 3 - Identify and evaluate potential research/science news stories

Job Duty 4 - Independently manage workload in an environment with multiple deadlines

Job Duty 5 - Collaborate with colleagues to generate fresh, creative content ideas to engage audiences

Job Duty 6 - Establish relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify or promote content

Job Duty 7 - Perform other related duties as assigned

Educational Requirements
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience
Two to four years of job-related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience


Additional Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in scientific field of study

Preferred Qualifications
Experience communicating for and with internal audiences, including e-newsletters .

The Technical Research Writer/Editor will conduct interviews with Georgia Tech researchers, scientists, and other subject-matter experts and produce news stories that describe scientific research and related topics in a way the general public will understand. They will also write, edit, and proof communications for internal Georgia Tech audiences.

The successful candidate will be able to write in clear, concise, accurate, and engaging language. They will also demonstrate strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with the ability to exercise professionalism, sensitivity, and good judgment.

Proposed Salary
Salary range: $63,303.00- $84,000.00

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

This job requires proficient technical writing expertise with strong background in editing and writing technical scientific content. Must be detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to prioritize multiple complex projects concurrently and adhere to deadlines. Ability to write in clear, concise and accurate language about complex scientific information, theories and practices that can be understood by the general public. Additional requirements include strong command of the English language evidenced by excellent written and verbal communication; proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
