Description

The Director of Student Activities provides leadership and administrative oversight for the
Student Activities Office, and advances community building, student learning and development,
and sense of belonging through the development of student-centered programming and
advising initiatives. The Director is responsible for the functions of the Student Activities Office,
which supports 140+ student organizations and oversees various programmatic initiatives,
student leadership development efforts, and traditions for Hamilton College. The Director also
manages the Sadove Student Center and Beinecke Student Activities Village, including
supervising the student staff that supports facility operations and runs a central Information
Desk. The Director promotes student engagement and learning in educational, cultural, social,
and recreational activities, assessing the needs and interests of our diverse student population
to determine programming, training, and student learning outcomes. The Director directly
advises a diverse portfolio of student organizations, including student government, student
media, and individual students on leadership and organizational concerns.

Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Lead long- and short-term strategic visioning and planning for the department, advocate for departmental needs and resources to support student engagement.
  • Spearhead assessment and benchmarking initiatives for the Student Activities Office.
  • Manage the operations and programming for the Sadove Student Center and the Beinecke Student Activities Village.
  • Collaborate with the College Events office to maintain student-centered space usage and scheduling policies for student programming and event spaces
  • Collaborate with students, administrators, faculty and staff to promote an inclusive and engaging learning environment outside the classroom through student-centered, collaborative programming.
  • Oversee the operating budget for the Student Activities Office, the allocation and spending of the Student Activities Fee (over $1 million annually allocated to various programmatic initiatives and student organizations), and the Renyi and Meyers endowments.
  • Supervise the Assistant/Associate Director of Student Activities and the Program Coordinator for Student Engagement.
  • Hire, train, and directly supervise the student co-managers of the Sadove Support Staff and support the co-managers in supervising their team of 20+ student employees.
  • Serve as the primary contract signatory for the Student Activities Office and student organizations on behalf of Hamilton College.
  • Oversee the advising structure for student organizations/clubs and provide training, resources, and guidance to advisors.
  • Advise and provide support for all campus publications, including but not limited to the Student Media Board, student newspaper, and college radio station.
  • Advise the Student Assembly executive board and its various committees, class councils, and traditions.
  • Oversee the Senior Days Committee in its planning and implementation of Senior Days events; recruit, hire, and train Senior Days staff; coordinate on-going events for seniors, including events with alcohol in the Pub.
  • Enhance and implement leadership development training and related opportunities for students
  • Collaborate in the planning and implementation of other campus events, including new student orientation and commencement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student personnel services, higher education administration, or related field plus 3-5 years post-Masters or equivalent professional experience required.
  • Relevant experience in leadership training and development, student activities programming, and major event coordination.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to learn, understand and implement FCC standards for College radio station, policies for College publications and films, as well as royalties and mechanical licenses for audio production and duplication.
  • Prior experience supervising and managing budgets is preferred
