Haverford College invites applications to our available full-time, exempt, benefit-eligible Director of Access and Disability Services position.
The Director of Access and Disability Services facilitates the provision of reasonable accommodations for Haverford College students with a wide range of disabilities in order to ensure equal access to programs, services, and activities. The Director partners closely with faculty and staff in developing and implementing fair and effective practices that provide classroom, housing, and dining access for the student population. The position also involves developing events, programs, and resources that address, as well as inform, the experiences and rights of students with disabilities.
Working collaboratively with a range of key partners, including CAPS, Advising Deans, IITS, Residential Life, Student Engagement, Health Center, Dining Center, Athletics, ADS Access Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, Campus Safety, and the Registrar's Office, the Director serves as a leader, thought partner and active collaborator on topics related to access, inclusion, diversity, and equity.
Location
As one of America's leading liberal arts colleges, Haverford is a close-knit, non-sectarian intellectual community located on a beautiful campus just outside of Philadelphia. Founded in 1833 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the College promotes student development and growth through an environment that emphasizes individual dignity, intellectual curiosity, and a critical engagement with society and fosters mutual respect and collaboration among students, staff and faculty. It has an enrollment of roughly 1400 students. The College has a Quaker tradition and highly values student governance and community, most notable in its campus-wide Honor Code.
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized support to students with disabilities, including meeting with students, reviewing and evaluating disability documentation, and determining and implementing appropriate accommodations.
- Facilitate housing accommodations in conjunction with the Office of Residential Life and dining accommodations with Dining Services.
- Provide students with assistive technology that will help them access course content effectively, and instruct them in its use. Collaborate with Instructional and Information Technology Services as needed.
- Consult with faculty regarding the needs of individual students with disabilities, promote equitable learning opportunities, and engage in the interactive process.
- Work collaboratively with staff and departments across campus to develop practices inclusive of those with disabilities (e.g., Advising Deans, Academic Resources, DEI Team, Student Engagement, Career and Professional Advising, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Services, Libraries, Campus Safety, Athletics, Instructional and Information Technology Services, CDO, Residential Life, and Dining Services).
- Develop and update policies and procedures that support the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Fair Housing Act, and disability-related theory and trends.
- Plan, coordinate, and participate in events on disability-related issues for faculty, staff, and students.
- Reach out to organizations and individuals outside the campus community for resources and suggestions.
- Communicate with parents/caregivers and prospective students about available disability-related services.
- Maintain student records relevant to accommodations. Navigate sensitive information with care and professionalism.
- Engage in professional development to keep current in trends and resources in postsecondary disability issues, and share information with campus colleagues.
- Hire, train, and supervise student and professional employees (i.e., note-takers, transcribers, etc.).
- Partner with ADS Access Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, advising deans, and other advising team colleagues to provide coordinated and comprehensive support to students.
- Oversee ADS budget and implement sound fiduciary decision-making.
- Bachelor's degree
- 4 years of professional experience that centers access and equity for individuals navigating disabilities.
- Master's degree in education, special education, counseling, disability studies, or a related field.
- Haverford College is open to applicants with a variety of experiences working in educational or therapeutic settings with individuals with disabilities.
- Knowledge of support services and accommodations for students with physical, medical, learning, and psychological disabilities at the postsecondary level.
- Ability to understand and interpret evaluations of disabilities, assess the appropriateness of documentation, and determine necessary, appropriate, and reasonable accommodations.
- Awareness of assistive technology and alternate media services for students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of the legal landscape and trends in accommodations for students with disabilities.
- Passion for working collaboratively with colleagues and students.
- Creativity in problem-solving, and dedication to establishing effective solutions.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships throughout the community.
- Awareness of educational, psychological, and social justice theories around disability, Universal Design, access, and identity.
- Skills in interacting with students with a variety of experiences with disability, and from a range of diverse backgrounds.
- Capacity for working independently, managing time effectively, exercising appropriate judgment, thinking proactively, and taking initiative.
- Willingness and ability to engage tactfully in difficult and sensitive conversations. Capacity to manage confidential student information.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including one-on-one and public speaking.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other essential computer applications. Familiarity with Titanium preferred, but not required.
