Within the Office of Student Life, the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) has been the heart of the Indiana University Bloomington campus for more 100 years. The Union provides programs and services that help students and others feel like they are welcome and connected to Indiana University. The Student Involvement and Leadership Center plays an essential role in the Union and University's efforts to make every IU student feel like they belong.

The Student Involvement and Leadership Center fosters growth and learning among all students by designing and supporting inclusive experiences and engaging opportunities that connect those we serve with the campus, the community, each other, and themselves. Housed within the Indiana Memorial Union, the Center is home to several programs that engage the student body including student organization support, advising of key University Student Organizations, leadership programs, and Late Nite programs.

Job Summary

This Leadership Programs Coordinator must be entrepreneurial, energetic, collaborative, and inclusive. This position is responsible for oversight and support of IU Bloomington student leadership development. This position requires knowledge of student leadership models, the ability to operate independently, build and maintain strong relationships, work with colleagues in schools and academic units, and create and evaluate new leadership programs and initiatives.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Facilitates leadership programs and initiatives including the LeaderShape Institute, student leader workshops and programs, and identity specific leadership programs. 
  • Meets regularly with student leaders to provide support, coaching, and guidance on how to create inclusive student programming and activities.
  • Uses best practices and inclusive research practices to measure, inform, evaluate, and strengthen leadership and civic engagement processes - especially related to managing conflict and complex community issues.
  • Develops and implements assessment and evaluation procedures for student engagement, community building, and student leadership skill building
  • Oversees a peer facilitation program of 5-10 student peer facilitators for student organizations and student groups with a primary emphasis on teambuilding. 
  • Works collaboratively with academic units and departments to promote leadership development opportunities across campus and through the Student Involvement and Leadership Center. 
  • Directs the campus wide constructive dialogue program for students to build skills to communicate across difference.
  • Supports annual campus events such as New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, Involvement Fairs, and other events that involve student organizations and clubs.
  • Guides marketing, outreach, and recruitment efforts to increase awareness of leadership offerings.
  • Serves on campuswide committees for student initiatives based on the priorities of the Office of Student Life.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives geared at improving student engagement and involvement outcomes at the program, department/division, or campus level.
    Interfaces directly with students, attending student life events and programs and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student life initiatives and objectives.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as student organization leaders, on shared student life goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student life initiatives.
  • Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student life initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports and presents to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Provides guidance to student organizations regarding operations, budget, leadership, activities, recruitment, registration, policies, and compliance. Promotes leadership and student development through advising of individual student leaders and volunteers. Contributes to formation, interpretation, and implementation of student organization policies.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student life initiatives to ensure student participation and inclusion.
  • May provide guidance to other Student Life Specialists; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.
