Missouri S&T Missouri S&T is one of the nation's leading research universities. Located about 100 miles west of St. Louis in the community of Rolla, Missouri S&T is an accessible, safe and friendly campus surrounded by Ozarks scenery. Missouri S&T offers 101 degrees in 40 fields of study, including business, education, engineering, the liberal arts and humanities, and the sciences. S&T also is home to the Kummer Institute, which was established in 2020 through a $300 million gift from Fred and June Kummer.

History

Founded in 1870 as the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, S&T was one of the first technological institutions west of the Mississippi River. One of four campuses in the University of Missouri System, the name was changed to the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1964 and to Missouri University of Science and Technology, or Missouri S&T, in 2008. Points of Pride Missouri S&T consistently ranks among the nation's best universities for starting salaries and return on investment. Known for its innovative approach to sustainability, S&T is home to the Solar Village and Eco Village two neighborhoods of student-designed and -built solar-powered homes connected to a smart grid.

One of the nation's most comprehensive geothermal energy systems provides power to the majority of S&T's buildings while cutting energy use by over 50 percent. S&T is a pioneer in explosives engineering, offering master s and Ph.D. degrees in the discipline. Missouri's first nuclear reactor is housed and operated at Missouri S&T. Constructed in 1961, the reactor is used for teaching and research. S&T operates its own experimental mine and is one of only a few universities in the nation with a mine rescue team. Our Experimental Mine was named Popular Science magazine's No. 1 "Awesome College Lab" for four years running (2010-2013). S&T's 19 student design teams include two world champions: the Solar Car Design Team (1999 and 2003) and Mars Rover Design Team (2017).
