General Description:
The primary responsibility of an Associate Instructor at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching. Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens.

The Associate Instructor is a full-time, restricted appointment position. The Associate Instructor is responsible for teaching various courses in the designated discipline/field of study. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face to face, remote, and online. The Associate Instructor position has an instructional load of 18 to 19 credit hours each semester. This position is relieved of most administrative and governance duties to spend time in student support and student success related activities. The Associate Instructor contract is for one academic year and contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.

Duties and Tasks:
Teach various courses in the Engineering Technology – Data Center Operations discipline. Courses are offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning environments. All faculty members must be available to teach on-campus in-person classes that may be offered during the day, evening or weekend. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, and participate in curriculum development and assessment.

Essential Functions:
The College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations; and answer emails in a timely manner. Teaching faculty are required to maintain current competency in their respective discipline or field of specialization and to advise students.

Required KSAs:

  • The ability to effectively teach Data Center Operations concepts in the classroom.
  • Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction.
  • Ability to use online resources and Learning Management Systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes.
  • Ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competencies OR appropriately related education and/or occupational certifications combined with substantial related experience in the occupational field. Qualifying degrees and coursework must be awarded and/or by/with a regionally accredited institution.
  • Two years of full-time related occupational experience. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalent. Additional experience beyond the minimum is required for those applicants/candidates that do not possess a minimum of an associate degree in the teaching field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the teaching field or a related field.
  • Experience teaching a wide range of Engineering Technology courses (Data Center Operations).
  • Experience teaching in the community college environment.
  • Experience with and preparation for teaching culturally, linguistically, socio-economically, and academically diverse students at the college-level.
  • Certification in teaching hybrid or online courses.
  • Industry certifications in the Data Center Operations field to include but are not limited to DICSI Installer 2 (Fiber Optic) and OSHA 10 industry credentials.
