Student Life Advisor (*Restricted)

Northern Virginia Community College

 

General Description:

This position is responsible to provide student engagement activities including, but not limited to, social and cultural events, involvement in student clubs and organizations, and developing student leadership opportunities for NOVA students. This position is responsible to develop training and recognition programs for student leaders and coordinates travel and volunteer opportunities for NOVA students.

 

Duties and Tasks:

  • This position is responsible for working with the Student Life Coordinator to plan, implement, facilitate and assess student events including cultural, educational, social, wellness, and volunteerism-based programming that occur on and off-campus. Keystone events and programs include Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian Pacific American Month, Drug and Alcohol Awareness Programming, NOVA Day, Spring Fling, and Finals Prep Week.
  • This position will spend significant time advising students on program planning, academic and interpersonal academic and interpersonal issues, and leadership roles.
  • This position may serve as a mediator for interpersonal and organizational conflicts among students or between faculty club advisors and student leaders.
  • The position will also assist with training student staff on department policies and best practices. This position also ensures proper execution of purchases and generates contracts adhering to NOVA, VCCS, and Commonwealth of Virginia policies procedures, and laws.
  • Communicates with vendors as needed to be compliant with rules and regulations and secure the best price for services.
  • Develop creative marketing and promotional materials for Student Life events.
  • Work a flexible schedule including mornings, nights, and weekends as needed to support Student Life initiatives.
  • Assist Student Services staff as needed, and make referrals to campus and community resources as necessary.

 

Essential Functions:

  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration

 

*This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.

 

KSA's/Required Qualifications         

KSAs:

  • Knowledge of and skills in computer usage, including Microsoft Office Outlook, and the use of the internet to complete research.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish goals and make decisions based on program and institutional policies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various populations orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, execute, and assess activities and programs for college students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff members.
  • Ability to advise students on program development and management, purchasing, college policies and procedures, and regulations related to student life programming.
  • Ability to oversee and work with students and faculty advisors in campus organizations.
  • Ability to work effectively with a highly diverse student population.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate collaborations with student groups, academic departments, administrative departments, and the community.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Strong customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement education and informational programs in a diverse cultural environment.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of students, and staff members.
  • Event planning experience in a college/vocational educational setting.
  • Administrative experience.

 

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience working with college age students in a student life, student activities, diversity and inclusion/multicultural services, or residential life department.
  • Purchasing experience using eVA or a similar purchasing system
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating collaborations with student groups, academic departments, administrative departments, and the community.
