Job Summary:
The School of Communication at Northwestern University seeks a dynamic and engaging person to serve as a Career Advisor within the Office of External Programs, Internships, & Career Services (EPICS). This person coaches, advises, and counsels students empowering them to make decisions associated with their career goals and objectives. This person will support students interested in areas of sound in music production, interactive design, podcasting, film and media sound, act as the EPICS liaison for students in the Master of Arts inSound Arts and Industriesprogram, and will support School of Communication experiential learning and curricular initiatives.
This position assesses individual situations and circumstances and creates, implements, and monitors recommendations, partnering with internal/external constituencies and resources that meet student needs. This person ensures compliance with all associated policies, rules, and regulations.
They will report to the Associate Director, Career Management.
Occasional evening and regularly scheduled Saturdays (4-5 per quarter) are required to support curricular initiatives. Some travel (local, domestic, and international) is required.

Specific Responsibilities:
Administration
- Implements strategic plans and contributes to process by reviewing existing practices and recommending enhancements and improvements.
- Participates with area/unit senior staff in the conceptualization, development and presentation of materials used in operations.
- Identifies improvement opportunities in regard to technology that will better enable advising program to achieve its goals and objectives.
- Reviews processes and recommends changes to incorporate state-of-the-art technology as appropriate into administrative, resource, service, etc. components.
- Provides student centered, personalized counseling and advising that focuses on a student's career development or professional success and in compliance with all associated policies, rules and regulations.
- Identifies service improvement opportunities that will enhance counseling and advising.
- Career advising & counseling may include: career assessment; search strategies for internships, co-ops and/or jobs; networking; resume & cover letter development; social media footprint; interviewing; job offer negotiation, etc.
- Partners internally with faculty to provide information regarding interfacing academic and career resources and services.
- Communicates with students' employers needs and processes
- Participates in trade associations and professional organizations.
- Researches economic conditions in regard to the job market, employment trends, and career opportunities.
- Incorporates social media and networking into program aspects as appropriate.
- Reviews market trends and best practices to recommend future plans to increase program resources, services, value, and participation.
- Develops plans and arranges programs - meetings, workshops, seminars, trainings, events, company visits, information sessions, career fairs, etc. designed to provide information, promote resources, and to build internal and external relationships.
- Identifies & obtains external expertise as needed and works with content experts for current and new programs.
- Reviews programs and recommends changes to increase value, resources and participants.
- Manages speaker selection, communication, and topic development.
- Leads program/project updates and improvements.
- Ensures that program/event details including communication, venues, presenters, travel arrangements, materials, refreshments and technology are arranged and completed in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Analyzes program sessions and interacts with participants for purpose of gaining consumer insight, growing and strengthening program knowledge, and optimizing client satisfaction.
- Coordinates the collection, analysis & reporting of required information for surveys, review documents, public information documents, etc.
- Analyzes evaluation data from internal/external participants (students, faculty, employers, etc.) to assist in program development and updates.
- Implements corrective actions required as a result of surveys or other indicators.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, local & NU laws, regulations, policies & procedures.
- Prepares documentation as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 1 year career counseling/advising in higher education or 1 year of industry experience; or other relevant experience required; OR
- Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's, Ph.D, JD or equivalent degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
- Excellent communication skills, strong organization skills, and a high degree of creativity
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment with students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
- Self-starter, able to work in a professional manner both independently and with others.
- Self-confidence and the ability to take ideas and translate them into actionable plans.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
- Previous experience coaching/advising/counseling students/clients in a university career center, academic unit, or industry environment.
- Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, arts, and/or related field
- 1-3 years of experience in a higher education or career services, preferably working with students interested in art, design, and media.
- Prior teaching experience in higher education.
- Familiarity with higher ed policies, procedures, and programs.
- Experience interacting effectively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and employment communities in an inclusive and collaborative manner.
- Knowledge of coaching/advising techniques and understanding of current trends in career development and higher education: including an understanding of career assessment, job-seeking skills, drafting cover letters and resumes, and interviewing techniques.
- Familiarity with Handshake or other career software platforms
- Knowledge or interest in the industries of interest to School of Communication students including communication, sound, music, media, production, performance or other creative industries.
