Job Description

Under general direction of a lead worker or supervision by departmental administrator performs highly skilled installation, repair, & preventive maintenance on air conditioning, refrigeration, & heating systems. Provides work direction, training & mentoring of lower-level air quality technicians and/or other trades workers performing craft duties. Established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills.
  • Adheres to all OSHA and/or Ohio University required safety guidelines.
  • Provides work direction, training & mentoring for other lower-level air quality technicians engaged in installation, repair, inspection & maintenance (including preventative maintenance) of air conditioning, refrigeration & heating systems.
  • Reciprocating, centrifugal, screw and scroll chillers: cleans, repairs, troubleshoots electric fans, controls, compressors, handles refrigerant.
  • Absorption chillers: cleans and repairs; troubleshoots electric fans, controls, pumps, etc. Handles bromide.
  • Dorm, dining & laboratory refrigeration: cleans and repairs; troubleshoots walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines, compressors, electric controls, pumps, etc. Repairs air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating systems, thermostats, relays, valves, controls, compressors & filters; solders piping as necessary.
  • Periodically inspects & tests installed equipment for proper assembly of components checking for any needed repairs & compliance with technical orders, blueprints, schematics, diagrams, specifications, handbooks.
  • Installs, repairs, calibrates, and troubleshoots pneumatic, electric, & DDC controls, VAV systems; reads and interprets wiring diagrams, schematics, PID diagrams, piping diagrams; identifies elements of process control (e.g., sensors, transmitters, variable frequency drives, controllers); installs, splices, and terminates low-voltage connections for control instrumentation wiring; generates new documentation, suggests & makes required modification to system as needed; uses laptop computer and appropriate software to troubleshoot and adjust HVAC controls.
  • Split systems: cleans and repairs; troubleshoots electric fans, controls, compressors, solenoid valves, etc. Installs & operates refrigeration, air conditioning, & heating units.
  • Performs inventory control, work scheduling. Completes necessary documentation. Uses computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Cleans and repairs window units, troubleshoots electric fans and compressors. Repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, and installs air compressors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Journey-level working knowledge of air conditioning & heating technology.
  • Skill in installation and maintenance of air conditioning, refrigeration and heating equipment.
  • Proficient use of personal computer and Windows operating system.
  • Read and write common vocabulary in sentence structure;
  • Add, subtract, multiply & divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals and percentages;
  • Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, and pictorial form.
  • Work independently or with others.
  • Demonstrate willingness to work with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrate dexterity and skill in use of craft-associated hand and/or power tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University guidelines and procedures.
  • Work at heights;
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.;
  • An established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills.
Training & Experience:
  • 48 months skilled experience in HVAC, refrigeration, controls, or equivalent.
  • EPA refrigerant handling certification.
  • Successful completion of any pertinent tests may be required.
  • Valid driver's license.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
  • May be exposed to dirt, grease, odors, cramped conditions, extreme hot or cold temperatures, heights, and electrical hazards; may be exposed to dangerous machinery; confined spaces.
