The Intermittent Float Nurse is an integral part of the Heritage College nursing team, ensuring the integrity and quality of clinical care and research at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in accordance w/ federal, state, and local regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals, and policies and procedures.

This position will independently perform medical tasks or assist with medical procedures performed in the clinical setting. The float nurse must be prepared to encounter diverse populations with a variety of conditions including investigational products or procedures. The float nurse must have a strong understanding of medical procedures (e.g. IVs, venipuncture, medication administration and accountability, ECG, etc.) and practices with excellent bedside care. Additionally, this position must have the ability to work with different units within the Heritage College. The float nurse primary assignment will be with the Clinical & Translational Research Unit with opportunities to perform across the clinical units in the college performing various clinical skills (e.g., vaccinations, patient education, teaching skills labs, etc.). Having strong adaptability skills and a team attitude is essential.

Primary Accountabilities
Performing Medical Tasks and Assisting with Medical Procedures:
Clinical settings in the Heritage College vary widely but many require some type of medical task or procedure to be performed. The float nurse must have a demonstrated track record of technical expertise and experience in performing invasive tasks such as setting and maintaining IV lines under time critical conditions, troubleshooting equipment. Some examples of other job duties include:
  • Collecting samples (e.g., venipuncture, fingersticks, urine, fecal)
  • Assisting in medical procedures including biopsies, insulin clamping procedures, etc.
  • Administering drugs (e.g., IV, injection, oral, etc.), distribution of investigational drug or intervention and provides patient teaching regarding administration or procedures, as necessary
  • Obtaining and processing collected samples (e.g., obtaining blood via venipuncture, blood processing, drug infusion, biopsies, etc.)
  • Performing medical tests (e.g., vital signs, imaging studies, electrocardiograms) · Providing clinical care and promoting health improvement for adults/children and communities in southeastern Ohio through education, screening, and improved access to health services
  • Ensuring compliance with protocols and program guidelines through accurate documentation and reporting
  • Documenting medical history and data
  • Having familiarity with EMRs and being responsible for documenting appropriately in the EMR
  • Obtaining authorization for release of medical information as necessary and assuring follow-up care/continuity of care with personal care providers
  • Providing education and medical information for disease management, clinical skills lab support for curriculum activities or workshops, or other assistance with clinical competency assessment
As Float Nurse, participates in other activities in the CTRU and Heritage College including but not limited to:
  • Participating in Business Continuity Planning activities for the CTRU
  • Participating in regular research team meetings and ORG or CTRU team meetings to discuss current activities or planning activities
  • Attending assigned training and maintaining proficiency with required technologies and procedures
  • Traveling to promote Heritage College activities, study needs, or community initiatives
  • Providing training or presentations to university, community, or other groups (e.g. Medical Students, GA's, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
    • BSN or BS with RN Certification
  • 3+ Years related work experience
  • Valid RN license from the state of Ohio
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year clinical research experience preferred
  • Knowledge of clinical trials and GCP concepts preferred

Pay Rate

The approved hiring range for this position is $32.65 to $36.66 per hour. Offers outside of this range of subject to additional approvals. The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate's education and experience in relation to the minimum qualifications for the position.
