Executive Vice President and Provost
The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) seeks an innovative and experienced leader to become the University's executive vice president and provost. The provost serves as the University's chief academic officer and oversees all academic units within the University's colleges, schools and campuses, as well as major academic support units. The University's next provost will have the opportunity to help lead strategic planning across the 24-campus institution and guide the future of Pennsylvania's largest—and only land-grant—university.
Reporting to President Neeli Bendapudi and working closely with fellow administrators, deans of academic colleges and other units, and many others across the University, the provost will provide vision and leadership to enhance the University's academic quality and research impact, operationalize its land-grant mission, and elevate its national and international stature. The provost will serve as a strategic partner to the senior vice president for research and other academic executives to drive robust interdisciplinary research, scholarship and creative activity. In addition, the provost will oversee, in partnership with the senior vice president for Finance and Business, the development and management of a new University resource allocation model to support the academic enterprise. The provost will also oversee the development and implementation of a student success plan to improve education access, retention rates, graduation rates and time to completion.
In collaboration with the newly appointed vice president for enrollment management and Commonwealth Campus chancellors, the provost will oversee growth in enrollment across Penn State's campuses by employing differentiated strategies to meet the unique needs of each and address local opportunities and challenges. The provost will champion innovative programs to imbed diversity, equity and inclusion in the culture of the University, with special attention given to improving the recruitment, retention, advancement, and sense of belonging of students, faculty and staff from underrepresented groups. The provost will also support the successful creation and delivery of innovative, revenue-generating programs, with an eye toward growth of Penn State's World Campus.
Penn State seeks to appoint an accomplished, results-oriented individual who embraces the broad, multifaceted role of a land-grant institution that is geographically distributed. The next provost will be a forward-looking, courageous leader capable of making difficult decisions and willing to take calculated risks. The ideal candidate will have overseen complexity and scale and will have a deep understanding of the day-to-day operations of academic units.
The successful candidate must possess a terminal degree and a strong scholarly record, and be recognized as a thought leader or contributor in their field of expertise. The next provost will have the intellectual breadth to work across diverse academic domains and champion disciplines and interdisciplinary programs across every school and college. The provost must demonstrate an established record of effective and collaborative leadership, including compelling evidence of having advanced diversity, equity and inclusion. The successful candidate will be a skilled communicator and active listener who has enabled shared governance and recognizes the unique, valuable contributions of the faculty and staff. Expert knowledge about the contemporary issues and trends in higher education is a must, as is strong emotional intelligence.
