The Department of Anthropology at Princeton University invites applications for a postdoctoral or more senior researcher to work directly with Professors Agustín Fuentes and Carolyn Rouse, and with Dr. Jeff Himpele and interact with a larger group of researchers in the multinational research project: Concepts in Dynamic Assemblages: Cultural Evolution and the Human Way of Being, beginning on or about August 1, 2023. We seek a post-doctoral scholar who is prepared to embrace the possibilities for incorporating interactive data visualizations and mapping into anthropological research. Working with Dr. Jeff Himpele in the VizE Lab, the scholar will work with researchers in cultural and biological anthropology who are joining forces to develop a biocultural, cognitive framework that focuses on how Concepts affect areas of skill, technology, and social life, and transform evolutionary dynamics. The project connects theory and methods in cultural evolution with anthropological theory, cognitive approaches, and ethnographic research. This research involves diverse sets of qualitative and qualitative data and demands innovative data visualizations to make our complex research data intelligible. We are especially eager to bring on board a researcher who will help us to pioneer new forms of ethnography that use data and visualizations to extend the purview of in-person, qualitative research. We do encourage scholars to publish from this work and advance their own research programs involving topics related to our larger effort. This project is also an opportunity to collaborate in surfacing new understandings and improved approaches to twenty-first century global challenges such as public health crises, pandemics, social inequities, and ideological conflicts. A scholar with experience in Ethnography and/or STS would be strongly preferred. Further, they should be able to work with structured data and ready to contribute skills in data visualization (in Tableau and ArcGIS, for example, or other platforms). All applicants should send a cover letter summarizing their relevant experience and career goals. Application dossiers should also include a full cv, names and contact information for three references, two samples of completed work (e.g. two dissertation chapters, data visualization, and/or published or submitted articles), and a one-page statement of how your work relates to our larger project. Application dossiers should be submitted online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/30402. PhD is required (or, expected by August 1, 2023). Appointments are for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. The Department values diversity among its faculty, is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community, and strongly encourages applications from women and members of underrepresented groups. Princeton University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
