Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Auxiliary Services, this position will serve as the lead for all functions within dining services (i.e., dining hall, retail operations, vending and catering).  It requires a broad understanding of, and a proven track record in providing food service management, both fiscally and functionally. The director must be able to lead a broadly diverse team by example and through training and education, while holding all levels of employees accountable for a safe working environment, excellent customer service and high quality and safe food preparation and delivery. 

Authority and Accountability

This position reports directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Auxiliary Services. There are numerous direct reports and significant budget authority. Full Administer responsibility for planning, forecasting, and final approval of budget transactions.

Direct supervisory responsibility: Associate Director, Administrative Assistant, Dietitian, Marketing Program Specialist, Accounting Associate, Human Resource Associate

Indirect supervisory responsibility:  Assistant Director, Food Service Manager, Food Service Assistant Manager, Chef, Cook, Food Service Specialist, Food Service Aide, Cashier, Account Clerk III, Office Supervisor, Storekeeper, Food Service Supervisor

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field

Work Experience: 7-10 years of progressive experience in a large comprehensive multi-unit dining program, of which at least 5 years at managerial level.

Technical Skills required: Proficient in MS Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Food Safety Certification/Licensure is required. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Ability to oversee (financial, human resource, customer service) a large, comprehensive dining operation that includes daily food services operations, catering, fast food/retail, vending and food service for summer campus and programmatic operations.  Strong leadership skills, effectiveness with oversight of diverse populations, and experience with conflict management. Demonstrated understanding of special needs of customers, including but not limited to nutrition programs, accommodations for allergies, and working knowledge of ADA issues impacting food service programs. Ability to manage budget, including cost forecasting and purchasing.  Ability to assure a safe, clean and hygienic environment through staff training and monitoring.  Strong service orientation that includes assessing needs and creating deliverables to attend to those needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with internal operating systems, including Workday.  Strong knowledge of the food service field at a national level. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS FOR GENERAL OFFICE:  Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  General office work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief period of time.
