Summary:
Adjunct faculty in the School of Design's Department of Art & Graphic Design will be responsible for teaching courses in Art and Design. Course assignments may include teaching Introduction to Art History or Topics in Art History and advising as it relates to the course being taught. Art History functions as part of the Graphic Design program's foundation, providing entering college students with hands-on skills and critical thinking capabilities to prepare them for success in the fields of visual communication design, graphic design, advertising, and marketing. Art History also serves as a general education humanities elective for any Stevenson student. Faculty members are expected to create an effective teaching environment that is conducive to student learning. The classroom and coursework should contain elements that recognize and enhance components of the learning process, employ effective delivery of instructional materials, and are responsive to the personal and professional needs of students. Teaching responsibilities may include 3-18 contact hours per academic year.

Department: School of Design: Art & Graphic Design

Education/Experience:
Master’s degree in art history or related art and design field. Two years college-level teaching experience, with a commitment to quality teaching; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Doctorate in Art History preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
Extensive knowledge of art history, contemporary art and design, research, and education trends.

Demonstrated teaching ability in Art History

A student-centered approach to teaching, and a commitment to first-year student achievement.

Extensive knowledge of contemporary visual art and design culture, complemented by a thorough understanding of historical/critical theory related to art and design

An understanding of and appreciation for the professional design field(s) students wish to explore and ultimately enter.

The ability to work collegially and collaboratively with a team of faculty sharing time, ideas, equipment, resources, and space.

Familiarity with Mac and PC operating systems

Ability to teach art history in support of students from multiple majors

Ability to instruct students of varying preparation and abilities

Commitment to integrity, excellence, learning, and community

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Excellent organizational, reasoning, and problem-solving skills

Commitment to excellence in teaching and service

Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds

Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Position requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.

Essential Functions:
Engage in instructional activity totaling no more than 18 contact hours per academic year (August through May), with no more than 9 contact hours taught in an individual semester.

Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or telecommunications courses and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations and projects; providing academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities.

Administrative responsibilities include writing syllabi, reading and responding to emails promptly, grading course work within a time frame that enables the student to incorporate feedback on their next assignment, submitting mid-term and final grades by posted deadline, and alerting appropriate university personnel to student problems on a timely basis.

Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public. Follow all faculty and program policies outlined by the School and the University.

Teaching assignments may require teaching day, evening, online or hybrid classes.

Meeting classes for the full class time during the scheduled dates and times.
