Assistant/Associate General Counsel

Job Purpose
The overall purpose of this job is to provide legal advice on a wide variety of issues that arise at the University under the supervision of the General Counsel. To act as an attorney for the University on a diverse range of legal subject matters. Serve as a point of contact for various units on behalf of the office of University Counsel. Anticipate potential legal issues and exercise reliable and well-reasoned judgment to provide advice and counsel in a manner that fosters sound decision-making. Provide legal support to the General Counsel. Provide legal advise to the President and Board of Trustees as directed.

Essential Functions
Provide legal advice on a wide variety of matters that arise at the University under the general supervision of General Counsel. Serving as counsel to the President and the Board of Trustees as directed by General Counsel. Consults with and advise faculty, staff, and administrators on legal matters as directed by General Counsel. Frequently interact with students, faculty, staff, and persons doing business with the University. Assist in formulating, implementing, interpreting, and reviewing rules, policies, practices, guidelines, and procedures for faculty, staff, and students. Research legal issues and draft reports and memoranda for the General Counsel and others as directed. Assist in reviewing, interpreting, and advising on all applicable state and federal laws.

Minimum Qualifications
Must have a law degree from an accredited institution and be a licensed attorney. For Associate Counsel a minimum of five years of relevant legal practice is required. Special Skills/Application of knowledge should include: Innovative problem solving, initiative, reliability; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently while effectively keeping supervisors and colleagues engaged. Excellent problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to address difficult and complex issues. Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating a collaborative approach that reflects a commitment to effective client service. Particular to Associate Counsel: Demonstrated understanding of unique and often complex decision-making dynamics associated with working in-state university system and on-campus counsel office.

Preferred Qualifications
For Assistant Counsel the minimum of three years of relevant legal practice is preferred.

Work Hours:

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience. Administrative Paygrade 52.
