Job Summary

The Assistant Director serves as a career specialist for a specific career community (a cluster of majors spread across several Colleges with an industry focus) in order to assist students in determining the best major fit and then preparing the student to compete for internships, professional employment, and/or admission into graduate school. The position of Assistant Director is responsible for providing individual career advising and follow-up services. Primary career development topics include career assessment, career exploration, internship and job search strategies, and career decision-making. Assistant Directors of Career Communities must work closely with College Associate Deans and Directors of Advising so consistent communication is a top priority. Together they must also develop strategic plans for working with college majors within their career communities. They are responsible for sharing information related to their career community with other advisors in the Stuckert Career Center in order to coordinate all services across all of the career communities.

The Assistant Director serves as a consultant for students, faculty, and staff members at the University and plays a vital role in assisting exploratory students with their major decision process. The Assistant Director develops partnerships and works collaboratively with staff from Employer Relations in the Stuckert Career Center to expand interactions with business, industry, government, and nonprofit employers to create and increase career-related experiential learning and employment connections for students. The Assistant Director is responsible for tracking, assessing, and evaluating efforts supporting student career development. This includes keeping career-advising notes in the campus advising hub and communicating with academic advisors and other university offices to support student success.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Extremely well organized with excellent follow-through ability. Effectively manage multiple tasks and competing priorities.Experience in counseling, advising or teaching of students/adults on their career/professional development. Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and to interface effectively with employers, students, alumni, faculty and university administrators. Ability to embrace and drive change and to organize and manage multiple priorities, programs, and projects, both independently and in a team. Proficient in the use of web-based software. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication, program planning, presentation, and computer skills. Ability to establish rapport and relate well to students, faculty, employers, and staff. Ability to work with a diverse population of team members and constituents. Willingness to work collaboratively with academic units. Service-oriented approach. Careful attention to detail.

Preferred Education/Experience

Prefer a Master's degree in counseling, student personnel, human resources, higher education, communication, business administration, or related field.Prefer a minimum of 3-4 years of experience working with college students and in-depth knowledge of the career needs of first and second-year students. Experience in college/university career services and/or in sourcing college talent for an employer (a minimum three years of experience is strongly desired).
