Job Description
The assistant director for museum operations will play an integral role in the re-opening of the Museum of Art and Archaeology in its new location in the historic Ellis Library at the heart of the university's campus. This position will help oversee the last phases of renovations and assist with implementation of the first wave of exhibitions and programming in the newly opened spaces and in the community.
Going forward, the assistant director will be responsible for matters relating to the day-to-day operations of the Museum, as well as supporting the director with certain personnel, fiscal, marketing/events, and development matters. In addition, this role serves as the liaison between the Museum and its separate fundraising organization, Museum Associates.
This is an ideal position for a highly motivated individual looking to work in museum administration and leadership. The successful candidate will have characteristics that include anenthusiastic and positive attitude, initiative,diplomatic demeanor, and superior problem-solving skills and judgement.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Museum director and working closely with the curatorial and education teams, the assistant director for museum operations' duties include:
- Operations:
- Ensuring the completion of the final construction projects to complete renovation of the Museum's public spaces, acting as the primary contact with university planning and construction services or outside contractors
- Planning and overseeing the visitor services employees and functions
- Planning and overseeing the safety and security functions for public areas of the Museum, and coordinating with the curators and registrar on security issues related to collections storage and object/artwork security
- Managing the Museum's calendar
- Tracking and reporting Museum attendance
- Finance:
- Leading the development, tracking, and reporting of the annual organizational budget, as well as individual exhibition, programming, or event budgets for fundraising or grant submissions
- Approving staff purchase orders and expense reimbursements
- Coordinating as necessary with other university departments on financial, facilities, or programming-related matters
- Programming
- Managing or assisting with community collaborations and other external-facing Museum projects or events
- Personnel:
- Supervising visitor services staff and student workers
- Marketing/Events:
- Preparing and implementing marketing plans for exhibitions, programs, and events
- Developing and maintaining a Museum “style guide” for consistent application of graphics and published documents across the Museum, overseeing student interns engaging in hands-on opportunities to gain design, marketing, and social media management experience
- Designing and directing production schedules for the Museum's published materials
- Updating the Museum website
- Development:
- Serving as the Museum liaison with Museum Associates
- Coordinating with the university's development staff as necessary
- Leading or assisting with grant writing or other development efforts
- General:
- Serving on the Museum's collections and exhibition committees as requested
- Coordinating the Museum's American Alliance of Museums reaccreditation application (due 2025)
Salary
Salary Range: $48,900 - $55,000
GGS Grade: 010

Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm. With some weekends and evenings
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exceptional written and oral communications skills
- Ability to manage relationships with tact and professionalism
- Competence using technology
- At least two years of full-time nonprofit management or similar experience, preferably in fiscal management and fundraising/relationship-building, preferably in an arts or cultural institution.
