About the Opportunity

The Office of Legal Affairs is seeking to fill an assistant general counsel position, which will serve the UNC System and will engage in a wide-ranging, intellectually challenging, fast-paced, and demanding practice in an educational setting. The assistant general counsel will work closely with in the Office of Legal Affairs to provide legal advice and counsel to the UNC Board of Governors, the officers and departments of the UNC System Office, the UNC constituent institutions, and affiliated entities. The position serves under the supervision and direction of the senior vice president and general counsel. The UNC System Office is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. This position will be expected to be on location in the Raleigh office at least four (4) days a week. This position will work closely with the attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs to provide professional, actionable legal advice and counsel in a variety of subject areas, including human resources, student and academic affairs, budget and finance, governance, and risk management. Additional duties may include drafting and revising policies, conducting legal research, responding to administrative agency or legislative inquiries, and contract review.

This position is located in Raleigh, NC in our state-of-the-art high-rise office space in the Dillon Building located in the vibrant Warehouse District. Covered on-site downtown parking is free to our employees. Employees will also have free access to a gym on site, the benefit of being down the block from the Morgan Street Food Hall & Market, as well as other local dining, arts and shopping amenities.

About the UNC System Office
The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team

The Legal Affairs division provides advice and counsel to the Board of Governors, the President, and members of the senior staff with regard to all legal and policy issues affecting the University including litigation, employment and personnel, research, intellectual property, real property and construction, governance and parliamentary procedure, privacy and public information, ethics and conflicts of interest, risk management, fiscal accountability, student and academic affairs, and constitutional issues affecting higher education. The division serves as the University's primary liaison to the North Carolina Department of Justice for purposes of ensuring appropriate management of the University's litigation matters and is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to promote awareness and compliance University system-wide with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and administrative requirements.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and license to practice law in North Carolina or be able to become licensed within one year from the date of appointment. The level of experience for this position is 2 to 5 years of post-license experience as a practicing attorney, where all or substantially all of the time is devoted to the practice of law in one or more specialty areas, such as student affairs (including financial aid, conduct and discipline, FERPA, student health, student organizations), human resources and personnel issues, campus safety, privacy, constitutional rights, data security, contracts, licenses, insurance, compliance, law enforcement, risk management, disaster preparedness, public records and open meetings, and intellectual property.

Required Competencies

Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice and counsel in a clear, cogent, and understandable manner and in such formats as may be desired by the organization, including through written correspondence, memoranda, briefs, and presentations, with little or no editing or revision by supervisors. Evidence of contributing to the professional development of colleagues, of contributing to the development of the profession (e.g., NACUA, state bar associations, CLE presentations) and the development and progress of clients, and of a strong ability to develop and maintain collegial, professional relationships with colleagues and clients.
