Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Assistant Director will advocate for, manage, and coordinate the support services needed for the operation of the Office of Military Affairs. This individual will manage a comprehensive and collaborative effort for UNCW while providing administrative and support services to maximize the recruitment, retention and graduation of veterans, military personnel, and their families. Position will include increased levels of interactions with statewide and national organizations including military leaders, business and industry and federal agencies. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Military Affairs. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Master's Degree in a relevant field. Served honorably in the U.S. Military (prefer candidate with combat experience); experience working with university students in the areas of mentoring, advising and/or counseling; knowledge of interaction of veterans' education benefits and student financial aid; knowledge of military transcript systems and awarding academic credit for military service; experience with Banner student system; ability and experience to handle complex and sensitive issues; advanced computer skills including website development and spreadsheets. Previous experience (or willing to obtain certification) as a Certifying Official with VA Benefits (G.I. Bill) and conducting research within the field of higher education.
