The University of Northern Colorado invites nominations and applications for the appointment of Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Grounded in the liberal arts, the college is integral to the comprehensive mission of the University. The Dean serves as the chief spokesperson and advocate for the College both within and outside of the University and ensures that the College serves as a vital resource to the state and region.
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a broad range of academic pursuits. The major areas of study are organized in fifteen units designated as departments or programs. These various disciplines give students a fuller understanding of the past, present, and future roles of both the individual and society in shaping human experience. The humanities and the social sciences are cornerstones of a liberal arts education. In courses and other learning experiences provided by the College, our students become familiar with the most significant accomplishments of the human intellect and spirit and gain appreciation for the potential we have as humans and as societies.
The College has fifteen different departments and programs: Africana Studies; Anthropology; Chicana/o & Latinx Studies; Communication & Journalism; Criminology & Criminal Justice; Economics; English; Gender Studies; Geography, GIS & Sustainability; History; Leadership Studies; Philosophy; Political Science & International Affairs; Sociology; and World Languages & Cultures. Several programs support teacher preparation.
Responsibilities of the Dean
The dean is a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team and provides strategic, collaborative leadership at the institutional and College levels. The dean leads College efforts focused on community engagement, including representing the College as a public advocate and strong representative of the disciplines represented in the College. The dean advances and upholds the institution's lived commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at all times. The dean is responsible for the College's revenue diversification, seeking donations from individual donors as well as corporate and foundation partners. As the chief academic officer of the College, the dean is responsible for the vitality of academic programs within the College and for supporting a culture of collegiality, continuous improvement, and evidence- and data-based decision-making. Strategic budgeting and advancing institutional strategic priorities are key responsibilities of the dean, who must also be committed to serving a diverse student population with integrity.
The following duties and responsibilities are essential to the position:
Student, Faculty, and Staff Success
• Leads the College's student success efforts to ensure the college's ongoing improvement of student graduation and retention rates as well as progress towards the elimination of equity gaps (including, but not limited to, ensuring that the College's academic programs provide clear, achievable pathways for student success and that all curricula are aligned with the potential pathways for our diverse student population);
• Creates and maintains short- and long-term plans for hiring needs and retention efforts in support of faculty and staff success and academic excellence;
• Develops and maintains an ongoing program for supporting faculty and staff throughout their careers at UNC, including support of professional development, research, creative activity, teaching, and service;
• Actively supports the implementation of High Impact Practices, including promoting education abroad programming, international research, etc.
Strategic, inclusive academic leadership
• Works collaboratively with faculty, students, and staff to strengthen the College and raise the visibility of the disciplines represented in the College;
• Provides focused, inspired leadership at the College level while supporting the strategic priorities of the institution through ongoing communication and education;
• Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to identify and implement solutions in support of strategic planning, strategic budgeting, and business process improvement;
• Aligns College priorities with the institutional strategic plan;
• Supports strategic budgeting at the division and college levels;
• Serves as a member of the Deans' Council and leads the College Leadership Council;
• Participates in working groups, shared governance committees, and external higher education committees and groups as assigned and needed;
• Collaborates effectively with Human Resources and the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to ensure equitable, smooth practices and processes related to hiring and retaining employees;
• Supports and develops unit leads (i.e., department chairs and directors), faculty, and staff to ensure their success;
• Supports and leads assessment, accreditation, and program review efforts within the College to ensure ongoing program vitality, including all programs that play a role in teacher preparation.
Revenue diversification and fundraising
• Leads fundraising efforts in collaboration with colleagues in University Advancement including, but not limited to, seeking funds from individual donors as well as corporate and foundation partners;
• Supports faculty in their efforts to seek and receive external funding;
• Represents the College and the institution as an articulate advocate for public education and for the disciplines within the College.
Data-Based and Evidence-Based Academic Resource Management
• Works to align fiscal planning and strategy with strategic priorities in the Division of Academic Affairs by ensuring strong data- and evidence-based decision-making related to budgeting;
• Supports and provides leadership for strategic enrollment management (including enrollment projections, scheduling, program capacity, program development, and overall Strategic Enrollment Management planning);
• Creates, communicates, and implements a resource distribution process within the College in support of strategic priorities and student needs;
• Provides leadership for the College's academic space planning and allocation as well as Information Management & Technology priorities and needs.
Qualifications
The College is seeking a dynamic leader who brings passion and an understanding of the convergent disciplines that comprise the College and a liberal arts education. The Dean must have demonstrated significant achievement in leadership and administration.
Specifically, the candidate must demonstrate evidence of the following qualifications:
Required qualifications
• A terminal degree in a discipline represented by one of the departments in the College, and a record of scholarly and professional accomplishment consistent with appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure;
• A minimum of three (3) years of academic leadership experience as a Dean, Associate Vice President, Associate Dean, Department Chair, Program Director, or similar position;
• Experience working in a shared governance environment;
• Demonstrated experience fostering faculty engagement and success in evidence- based pedagogy, scholarship, and service;
• Demonstrated ability to lead effectively and empathetically in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion, preferably in higher education.
Preferred qualifications
• Demonstrated experience with effective scheduling, enrollment projections modeling, and other aspects of strategic enrollment management and strategic budgeting;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Ability to interpret qualitative and quantitative data and the ability to use appropriate software (e.g., Banner, Insight, Power BI) to engage with these data and use them in the decision-making process;
• Ability to build budgets and multi-year fiscal outlooks;
• Ability to lead and inspire within a shared governance, resource-constrained environment;
• Ability to manage change, innovate, and make difficult decisions in a collaborative and inclusive manner;
• Ability to collaborate with stakeholders and colleagues across a broad range of groups, backgrounds, and positions;
• Ability to solve problems creatively while working to build consensus that effectively moves the College forward;
• Current knowledge about the humanities and social sciences disciplines (including the ability to identify the potential for new programs);
• A high degree of creativity and mature intellectual judgment, as well as a high level of empathy and diplomacy in working with stakeholders within the institution and in the community.
