Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Impact Assessment and Organizational Analysis, the Head of Library Research works to sharpen the Libraries' strategic foresight and inform continuous planning. The Head tracks, synthesizes and presents research findings, trends, and forecasts that pertain to information services, higher educational practice in teaching, learning, and research, emerging technologies (particularly artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and XR), digital transformation, organizational design, workforce dynamics, and the impact of present and future environmental disruptors on mission continuity, organizational climate, and the quest for equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility. The Head orchestrates information relevant to strategic direction and supportive of organizational learning which may be drawn from a variety of environmental sources, such as Higher Education data sources, information science, library management information systems, project management, strategic communication, library-conducted user experience (UX) research, and programs devoted to organizational awareness and effectiveness. The position also coordinates assessments of service quality, and works with a range of staff to evaluate and sustain the alignment of library services to developments in pedagogical theory and practice. In this capacity, the position aids staff in recognizing and responding to the real-world challenges of change. The Head of Research also leads a program of learning experiences for staff, designing venues for learning and diverse, equitable, inclusive dialog that fosters a change-resilient staff and organization. Finally, the Head monitors funding and grant opportunities that can fuel innovation in library services and raise the Penn Libraries' capacity for thought leadership in academic support.

Job Description

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Conducts primary research at the intersection of information services and teaching, research and learning in higher education. Synthesizes and presents findings to inform planning, decision-making, environmental forecasts, and related activities that support and sustain the relevance and continuity of library services.
  • Establishes and maintains a Library research presence that provides staff with research findings and the results of empirical analysis of trends, relevant initiatives at Penn, change in the library and information space and other topics useful to organizational analysis.
  • Coordinates, conducts, and advises on business and feasibility analysis for proposed solutions, services, collaborative ventures and other initiatives that fall under the purview of senior administrative governance.
  • Monitors potential threats to mission and service continuity; Organizes and presents data and information that guide leadership and cognizant staff in change management.
  • Develops a program to fosters a climate of organizational learning, and oversees a measurable process of advancing learning.
  • Monitors and pursues fund raising opportunities that advance the mission of the Research Office.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree with concentration in higher education, organizational dynamics, business intelligence, or related fields.
  • 3+ years of experience in executing end-to-end primary research projects. Similar experience in a higher educational or research library setting desirable; similar experience at a senior level in foundations or research institutes, or related organizations may apply.
  • Advanced understanding of organizational dynamics, trends, history and futures in the R1 space strongly desired.
  • Experienced in designing and analyzing quantitative survey data.
  • Experience with advanced analytical techniques with an ability to effectively identify key findings.
  • Excellent writing and verbal competence.
  • Ability to work independently; to manage a complex portfolio of projects and related deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team-focused, inclusive environment
  • Demonstrated record of initiative and creative thinking.

$90,000 -- $100,000 commensurate with education and experience.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
