The Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA Director) is a Faculty Librarian in the University Library System (ULS) Administrative Services Department and reports to the Hillman University Librarian and Director of the ULS. The DEIA Director serves as a member of the Library Management Team (LMT), a team dedicated to developing and modeling shared leadership and participatory decision-making in setting and implementing the strategic vision and direction for the ULS. The DEIA Director builds and facilitates strategic partnerships with Pitt and community stakeholders, who support historically underserved populations, to advance the ULS mission, create opportunities for cooperative alliances and projects, and advance the library as a partner. The DEIA Director collaborates with colleagues across the ULS, including the regional campus libraries, to facilitate, guide, and support diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and antibias antiracism (ABAR) initiatives and programming happening across the organization and campuses.

Responsibilities:

Building Community:
  • Build partnerships with Pitt and community stakeholders, who support historically underserved populations (including on the Regional Campuses), such as the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (OEDI), Pitt's Community Engagement Centers (CEC), Global Studies Center, University Educational Outreach Center, Office of Disability Resources and Services, Student Affairs, student groups, student success programs across campuses, etc. to advance the ULS mission and create opportunities for cooperative alliances and projects.
  • Collaborate within the Inclusion Network, DEI practitioners from around the University and the broader community, as well as serve as the liaison to this group for the ULS.
  • Connect Pitt and community stakeholders with appropriate ULS colleagues to advance the library as a partner, promote the services and resources of the library, and establish prospects for joint programming and other ULS initiatives.
  • Provide support to ULS units initiating or planning DEIA /ABAR-related events across the University's campuses and within the community.
  • As opportunities arise, work in cooperation with the ULS Director of Development to help identity, facilitate, and maintain strategic relationships with Pitt alumni, corporations, and local, state, regional and national organizations focused on multicultural education, diversity, and inclusion to establish prospects for joint programming and support of ULS initiatives.
  • Lead, initiate, and collaborate on programming such as lectures, discussion panels, exhibits, performances, readings, etc. designed to educate, encourage critical thinking, and engage in meaningful dialog about all diversity including, but not limited to, racial, ethnic, geographic, socioeconomic, first-generation, gender identity, ability/disability, political views, religious affiliation, intellectual tradition, legal status, etc.
  • Facilitate group discussions, town hall meetings, and other engagement opportunities in response to campus, national, and global events related to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging.


Strategic Planning:
  • Coordinate and facilitate ULS strategic planning and prioritization in DEIA, together with the Assessment and Quality Assurance Department, by conducting periodic climate surveys, implementing strategies and initiatives that advance these values, and assessing to improve upon processes and tools.
  • Collaborate with AUL for Administration and Organizational Development to advance the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce and an inclusive, culturally competent work environment for all ULS employees.
  • Provide guidance and recommend how ULS employees can be successful in "Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" as a criterion for all staff performance appraisals.


Program Management:
  • Plan and coordinate the Librarian Fellowship and Residency Program in cooperation with the School of Computing Information (SCI).
  • Facilitate and coordinate the ULS Diversity Committee, a volunteer group committed to advancing and promoting DEIA activities across the ULS.


Required Qualifications:

A successful candidate for the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility will have the following required qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or another degree in a relevant field such as higher education, social work, social sciences, cultural studies, etc.


Required Skills:
  • Self-motivation, project management skills, and the ability to multi-task with various deadlines.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively network, build relationships, and collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders with diverse commitments and needs.


Preferred Qualifications:

The Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility will be responsible for various aspects of strategic planning and management and will ideally have two or more of the following qualifications:
  • Evidence of strong commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population.
  • Evidence of a deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting DEIA/ABAR throughout a complex and dynamic organization.
  • Experience with facilitating DEIA/ABAR programming, training, or other initiatives.
  • Proven track record of cultural competence, understanding, and working with diverse racial, ethnic, religious, academic, socioeconomic, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity communities.
  • Evidence of knowledge and experience to self-navigate, value, incorporate, foster, and celebrate cultural differences in alignment with the proposed ACRL Cultural Proficiencies for Racial Equity (CPRE).
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines related to diversity, inclusion, and nondiscrimination in higher education, including Title IX, Title VI, Title VII, Clery Act, ADEA, ADA, and Section 504.
  • Proven analytical skills and ability to provide oversight for assessments related to campus climate, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Engagement with a well-established network of diversity professionals within higher education and libraries.
  • Familiarity with shared governance in a higher education setting.
  • Certified Diversity Professional (CDP); Certified Diversity Executive (CDE); Cornell Certified Diversity Professional (CCDP); or other related equity, diversity, or inclusion certification.
