BACKGROUND
Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has been made to enable its development and success. The Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 undergraduate medical students in June of 2016 and graduated this first class in 2020. In February 2020, the Dell Medical School received full LCME accreditation. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's leading research universities, the Dell Medical School pursues innovation in the re-design of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education.
Dell Medical School's mission is to revolutionize how people get and stay healthy by:
● Educating leaders who transform health care;
● Evolving new models of person-centered, multidisciplinary care that reward value;
● Advancing innovation from discovery to outcomes;
● Improving health in our community as a model for the nation; and
● Redesigning the academic health environment to better serve society.
The Internal Medicine residency has been in existence since 1974. We are a fully ACGME accredited residency sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. Infectious Diseases clinical faculty have traditionally held a unique role of covering an inpatient Internal Medicine ward team, in addition to providing 24/7 Infectious Diseases inpatient consultation services. Faculty also provide oversight for antimicrobial stewardship initiatives, outpatient antimicrobial therapy, quality improvement of hospital processes related to Infectious Diseases, and education curriculum for medical students, Internal Medicine residents, and faculty. Some faculty also participate in outpatient general ID and HIV care. The Dell-Seton Hospital at the University of Texas is a state-of-the-art facility with a modern microbiology laboratory that services the entire Seton network of hospitals in central Texas. It is also the primary site of a network-wide Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program which provides opportunities for scholarly collaboration. Currently, the majority of clinical research opportunities exist within the hospital setting, with the potential to expand to other outpatient clinical sites and/or the University of Texas main campus.
A renal transplant program has begun in collaboration with our hospital partner Seton/Ascension. There is an ambitious timeline for growth, with expansion to pancreatic transplant, followed by liver transplant. There is also an expanding young adult post-transplant program at Dell Children's Hospital with increasing need for adult ID care. It is expected that the new clinician will work closely with our transplant team to help build the highest quality program and expand opportunities for process improvement, education, and future clinical research.
