Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
Lab Technicians perform a variety of routine, technical, and administrative responsibilities in support of research at the university. They perform duties such as the following: collecting specimens, preparing materials, operating and maintaining equipment, ordering lab supplies, and maintaining inventory. They also assist with data analysis and report writing. They may work independently or as a member of a team. They work under general supervision, resolving most standard issues independently and referring complex issues to an upper-level manager. Technicians typically report to a manager or director or may report to a department administrator.
VCU School of Pharmacy, Department of Medicinal Chemistry invites you to apply for our Laboratory Technician position. This position will conduct a collaborative research project and provide technical support in the area of biochemistry/molecular biology.
The responsibilities of this position also include, but are not limited to: recombinant protein expression and purification, enzyme activity assays, organic synthesis and purification, data collection and analysis, assisting and teaching junior lab members (postdocs, student workers, graduate assistants, etc.) about specific laboratory techniques and protocols.
Minimum Hiring Standards
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in gene cloning, protein expression in E. coli and protein purification.
• Superior organization and time management skills.
• Prior exposure to biochemical and molecular biology techniques.
• Knowledge of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), Mass Spectrometry and/or X-ray crystallography.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Exhibits professionalism and ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a diverse environment.
• Establishing and maintaining productive relationships with VCU colleagues and all customers and contacts necessary to effectively support research studies.
Preferred Hiring Standards
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a BS/MS degree in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Chemical Biology or related field.
