Provide supervisory support, advice and leadership in the workplace to assigned shift communications personnel.
Ensure calm, quality, effective, and accurate responses to calls and dissemination of information.
This position also serves as an Emergency Communications Officer to provide timely, accurate, competent and courteous communications service to the University and Hospital community who are in need of emergency assistance and other services.
Provide communications services to VCU Police department and other governmental units in a manner that assists those agencies in carrying out their responsibilities.
Typical Education and Experience
- Possession of current DCJS Basic Dispatch certification, VCIN Full Access certification and valid DMV operator's license.
- High School diploma or GED required. Several years' experience in emergency communications or similar working environment required.
- Must have knowledge of supervisory concepts.
- A minimum of five years as an emergency dispatcher, a “Successful” or higher performance evaluation, and no current or pending disciplinary action.
- Knowledge of emergency communications practices and terminology as well as guidelines of the work area is required.
- Requires a high level understanding of operating policies and procedures and the ability to apply these to complex administrative problems.
- Requires the ability to analyze all emergency situations to determine course of action and solve problems; excellent judgment and decision making skills.
- Dependable work ethics.
- Excellent oral and good written communications skills.
- Extensive use of computers to retrieve and input information.
- Ability to fit into a team environment characterized by shared accountabilities.
- Ability to train staff, assist in assessing needs, developing resources and enhancing technology and procedures for an emergency communications center.
- Must have considerable knowledge and skills in managing and prioritizing emergency communication incidents.
- Must have never been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
- Ability to work rotating or additional shifts when requested, up to 12 hour shifts.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
College degree preferred.
Experience in team building, staff development and training.
Minimum of three years' leadership experience preferred.
Salary Range: $46,000 - $50,000
