VCU Safety & Risk Management has an exciting opportunity for a Radiation Safety Specialist!
Position Summary/Overview:
Safety and Risk Management (SRM) partners with the VCU community to promote and facilitate a positive, campus-wide attitude of safety excellence and environmental stewardship to protect university assets and reduce risks. The primary mission of Safety and Risk Management and Environmental Health & Safety is to advance and support a safe and healthy environment at VCU and VCU Health. This work is accomplished through surveys, consultation, teaching, advising, auditing and environmental monitoring. As the University liaison for safety and compliance, we work with outside agencies and organizations to address all applicable standards.
The Radiation Safety Specialist plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the university and VCU Health System maintain compliance with state and federal requirements that apply to research and medical applications of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices. The incumbent will perform duties required by VCU's radiation safety programs to meet all Federal, State and University regulations and policies including but not limited to radiation safety surveys and inspection, Laser safety, X-ray audits.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in physical or biological sciences or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practice of health physics and radiation safety.
- Considerable knowledge of applicable state and federal radiation control standards/regulations and medical uses of radioactive material and radiation-producing devices.
- Knowledge of dosimetry, instrumentation used in radiation detection and calibration.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and implement radiation surveillance programs and conduct appropriate sampling under emergency conditions; to manage a technical program and radiation training program.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Superior customer service skills.
- Valid Driver's License
- Certification in one of the following: National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists, Nuclear Medicine Certification Board, American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, or other radiation safety certifications/registrations.
