Position Focus:
The Director of Communications and Marketing for Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) at Yale School of Management (SOM) provides leadership to support the school's vision & mission by designing and implementing an integrated and analytics-driven marketing & communications strategy to promote SOM, its fundraising priorities, programs & affiliated alumni groups to worldwide SOM community and campus partner. The Director focuses on content strategy, segmentation & messaging for multi-layered audience, and leverage data & relationships to inspire philanthropic support and engage members of the alumni community. Lead communications, marketing strategy & implementation of DAR materials & collateral. Collaborate with SOM departments to leverage expertise & promote SOM messages & content interest to alumni. Provide guidance to SOM staff on alumni-focused communications (email marketing, social media, analytics & style guides). Collaborate with Yale Alumni Association & other professional school alumni relations colleagues. Manage SOM DAR's relationships with internal/external vendors for graphic design, specialized content, writing & video. Represent DAR to other school & university departments; serve on appropriate committees. Collaborate with SOM Communications to develop school-wide communications strategies & initiatives. Develop framework and brand voice for SOM DAR strategic communications across multiple platforms. Identify new and innovative content delivery opportunities. Oversee creation of content & manage plans for signature programs.
Manage key communications for SOM senior leadership to alumni. Solicit and curate alumni-written content. Manage all alumni website related issues. Oversee the alumni engagement platform. Determine team roles & responsibilities to manage groups, create/manage content, moderate user activity, and troubleshoot/fix bugs. Shepherd visual identity guidelines for SOM volunteer-led alumni organizations. Coordinate and build cohesive email & social media marketing program and strategy for alumni relations & development, offering tailored services for different audiences & working with key volunteer leaders. Develop social media strategy to expand the reach of alumni-related online content to key audiences. In concert with SOM Communications, produce and curate Yale SOM Exchange, a webinar series to promote professional development and lifelong learning for SOM alumni. Produce and market monthly career webinars for SOM alumni curated by Career Development Office staff. Oversee production of annual IMPACT publication and annual honor roll. Manage timely compilation and communication of honor role to alumni.
Oversee Yale SOM 5th decade history project, including stewardship of project donors, creating historian/video producer job description, hiring, and managing historian/video producer, and driving overall direction of the 50th anniversary video interviews, documentary, and book preparation. Participate in and staff SOM AR activities, including evenings and weekends. Supervise production of all printed/designed materials. Direct, manage, coach, and develop team members, providing supervision, guidance, and mentoring in goal setting, performance management, skill building, and professional growth. Oversee the creation of metrics, visualizations and analyze community data for SOM alumni marketing activities; develop goals. Rely on a wide range of data sources and machine learning tools, identify actionable communications and marketing opportunities, serving as a key contributor to data-driven decision-making on the team's behalf.
The following Essential Duties are generic in nature; the information contained in this Position Focus is most relevant to this position.
Essential Duties:
1. Manages relationships with external media sources. Pursues media coverage creatively and aggressively. Responds to inquiries from national and international news media, student media, the University community and the general public. 2. Enhances the overall quality of media relations for key stakeholders by preparing them for media interviews. Manages relationships with key campus stakeholders with a high degree of professionalism, judgment and understanding of stakeholder goals. 3. Creates compelling story ideas and narratives; produces content for both external and internal channels; writes copy and social media posts and manages content. 4. Plans social media strategies for key University communications and programs. Monitors University social media assets for negative comments or misinformation. 5. Supports short- and long-term communication planning with insights into audiences, channels and culture; coordinates with other communications professionals to achieve institutional goals; leads the communications process within developed standards and protocols. 6. Supports effective response strategies, often in crisis situations requiring 24/7 attention and intense media/public scrutiny, and articulates the University’s position via personal interviews or written responses. 7. Produces multimedia content and manages the work of graphic and web designers, student interns, printers, video producers and photographers. 8. Manages communication plans for all stakeholders by understanding the significance of campus initiatives and/or academic work; creates compelling stories and messages to translate the significance through language that is clear and accessible for public awareness. 9. Develops and maintains regular contact with media representatives in multiple disciplines. 10. Maintains the Yale brand and graphic identity standards; supports and maintains standard operating procedures; contributes to digital asset management. 11. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field and five years of experience in public relations, journalism, television, corporate communications or agency work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in developing communications for a range of media and working with creative professionals in design, photography or video.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Outstanding verbal and written communications skills. Proven ability to produce original content that is factual, compelling, and persuasive; think analytically and articulate ideas in various communications formats; and data visualizations. Skilled editor across multiple media, including articles, email, websites & social media channels.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Excellent interpersonal & organizational skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively; build productive working relationships with staff & volunteers to achieve common goals & contribute to SOM missions; and build long-term relationships with alumni and donors.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and track record of building and leading diverse, inclusive teams. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Ability to prioritize and meet multiple, competing responsibilities. Demonstrated success in developing and managing multiple projects and deadlines from conception to completion with exceptional attention to detail.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to work successfully and creatively in a fast-paced and changing environment while maintaining composure and a sense of humor. Willingness to learn new tools and stay abreast of marketing analytics trends.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience in development & alumni relations in higher ed or related field. Proven competencies in communications, marketing strategy, branding and positioning, digital marketing, content marketing, workflows, and reporting/analytics. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Drupal or other web CMS, email messaging systems, and CRM platforms. Experience using social media for business applications.
