We invite applications for an exciting opportunity to impact Greek Life in the Division of Student Affairs. The University’s mission to develop engaged citizen-leaders is the foundation of the Division’s work, which is guided by six core values – academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service and student self-governance. The Division consists of over 200 employees within five units -- the Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer, the Office of the University Dean of Students, Student Health, the University Career Center, and the Office of African-American Affairs – all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known. The Division is recruiting an Assistant Dean & Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life in the Student Engagement & Inclusion unit of the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS).
Directors in the Division of Student Affairs have programmatic, student support and, in some cases, incident response and crisis management responsibility. For this particular position, the Director is a member of the broader Student Engagement & Inclusion team, supporting students’ involvement across a wide range of functional areas beyond FSL and including multicultural student services, public service, leadership, and student organizational support. Significant cross-functional teamwork is expected and serves to strengthen both student and professional experiences.
Programmatic responsibilities depend on the particular Director’s assignment, but include setting the mission and strategy for a department. They establish and assess annual departmental goals, allocate staff and financial resources, communicate with key stakeholders across the University, and support the broader strategy of the Division of Student Affairs and the University. Often Directors are not managing programs themselves, but are supporting students in program design and implementation, requiring them to collaborate with students in meeting their goals. They often practice considerable supervisory responsibility and engage in staff performance management.
Student support responsibilities include mentoring, training, and/or supervising students and student groups, as well as helping students solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges and/or crises. Through formal and informal interaction, student affairs professionals assist students to achieve their goals. These interactions may include responding to student walk-ins; responding to questions from parents, faculty or staff; or meeting with students and student groups on a variety of issues.
Finally, Directors may serve on the “Dean On-Call” rotation, and have other responsibilities relating to incident response and crisis management. In these cases, Directors will also carry the title of Assistant Dean and will be expected to respond appropriately to student incidents and crises; coordinate emergency protocols and provide crisis management support. Assistant Deans must also collaborate with and make referrals to University offices/organizations to provide broad-based student support while implementing appropriate administrative processes, as needed. This position will report to the Associate Dean of Students in Student Engagement & Inclusion.
The Assistant Dean and Director in Fraternity and Sorority Life in the Office of the Dean of Students/Student Engagement & Inclusion will work directly with students and student organizations participating in the four Greek Councils at UVA with a membership of roughly 30 percent of the undergraduate student population (62 Greek organizations in total). Programmatic responsibilities for this position include setting and leading the mission, vision, and strategy for the office and providing leadership, training, and management of staff members engaged in program design, implementation, and support services for students and chapters that are part of the four councils: the Inter-Fraternity, Inter-Sorority, National Pan-Hellenic, and Multicultural Greek Councils. Particular emphasis will be on leadership development and developing safe and inclusive recruitment and intake processes. Student support responsibilities include those enumerated for all Directors, though primary focus will be on members of the Greek community across all fours councils. Given the nature of the work in Fraternity & Sorority Life, stakeholders requiring direct engagement and support will include chapter advisors, alumni, community, parents and headquarters partners. Finally, the Director will also hold the title of Assistant Dean and incident response responsibilities will include being a member of the Dean on Call rotation, as well as being asked to assist with incident management and support in the wake of student incidents or crises that have particular impact upon the Greek community.
