Substitute Childcare Teacher
Posting Number

Department
Childrens Center
Job Summary

Substitutes come to the Center to support each program as an important set of hands when an educator is absent. We invite subs to come weekly in order to build relationships with one or two programs at the Center rather than float through all the age groups. When a sub builds a relationship with the children and the team, there is a sense of predictable and consistent support. Subs are asked to help with teacher-work activities, wash dishes, sit with playing children, and participate in the outside program. Because of the play-based and nature-based focus in our programs, subs will be outside and inside while they observe and attend to children's play. Start dates are for the fall semester, August/September.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefit eligible position.

About Bowdoin

About the Children's Center

Our Mission
The Children's Center at Bowdoin College strives to provide an excellent standard of care that intentionally nurtures and supports all children, families, and educators.

Our Philosophy
At the Bowdoin College Children's Center, we understand that there are two interwoven paths that lead to children's learning through play. One path is the creation of a rich, landscape that fosters a nurturing world where the healthy development of attachment and emotion can thrive. We strive to create a haven where children can trust, predict, and experience security. With this solid emotional foundation, they play and so they learn. We protect their play and learning from the circumstances and obstacles of group care that can be distracting; and thus, minimize the impact of group care on children's learning.

The other path is the engaging environment where substantive and deep play offers cognitive growth and social development. When young children play, they refine motor skills, explore the physical properties of objects, learn cause and effect, and engage in means-end problem solving. We intentionally offer materials that deserve children's attention, investigation, and exploration while we protect children's play from interruption by offering a quiet adult-presence.

Bowdoin College is a highly selective liberal arts college, enrolling approximately 1,800 students. Through a need-blind admissions policy, the College meets 100% of students demonstrated financial need with no loans. 32% of students identify as students of color, an additional 5% are international, and 45% receive financial aid. Bowdoin is a dynamic living and learning community committed to fostering pluralism, building community, and nurturing a commitment to the common good.

The College seeks academically and culturally diverse faculty and staff, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds, and/or who have experience working collaboratively with diverse populations. Bowdoin is set in the coastal New England town of Brunswick, Maine. Brunswick, a town of 22,000 residents, brings together elements of both city and country living including cultural offerings, a variety of restaurants, and four-season activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Bowdoin's historic 215-acre campus, comprising 120+ buildings, is a brief walk to downtown Brunswick, and is 25 miles from Portland and about 120 miles from Boston.
