San Jose State University (SJSU) seeks an experienced, innovative and visionary academic leader committed to excellence in teaching, research, professional practice and service as its next dean, College of Health and Human Sciences. Founded in 1857, San Jose State University is the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast, serving nearly 36,000 students as the only public four-year university in California's "Silicon Valley." SJSU seeks a dean that can leverage the strength of this diverse campus community to meet the needs of its learners and advance the health and well-being of the local and global communities that this institution serves, while also attracting even greater faculty, staff and student diversity to the college.
Reporting to the provost, the dean serves as the senior administrator and is the principal champion for vision, leadership and strategic direction for the College of Health and Human Sciences. The dean is uniquely placed to create an environment within the college to support the campus' investment in recruiting and retaining diverse faculty and staff as well as undergraduate and graduate students. The dean must work effectively with departments, faculty, staff, other senior administrators and student leaders to define, articulate and successfully implement a distinctive mission, vision and educational philosophy for the college. The dean is responsible for leadership of the college's strategic planning, student success efforts, accreditation, enrollment, academic program planning, assessment of curriculum and instruction, recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff, professional development and research support, budgeting and fiscal management and the allocation and use of facilities.
The dean represents the college and university in community, corporate and professional organizations and agencies. This person is required to develop resources from internal and external connections that further the goals of the college and university in an environment where external philanthropy has become of greater importance to the sustainability of programs. The dean will play a prominent role in development efforts, actively participating in fundraising activities. The dean must exhibit solid management skills, effectiveness in resource acquisition and allocation, ability to build partnerships within the university and throughout the community and a clear understanding of state and national trends in higher education and in the disciplines. As a member of the provost's Academic Affairs leadership team and the president's leadership council, the dean works with the president, provost, deans and other senior administrators to manage the university's resources to accomplish the college and university's goals.
This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations. Required Qualifications
-A terminal degree in a health science discipline or equivalent
-Academic work qualifying the candidate for appointment at the rank of Professor
-Demonstrated record of teaching, research, service and/or experience meriting appointment as a tenured professor in the college
-Demonstrated ability to develop a culture of philanthropy Preferred Qualifications
-Leadership experience at the department chair, director, associate dean or dean level, gained within a multi-disciplinary school of allied health or health/human sciences
-Experience with and demonstrated knowledge of accreditation standards and processes for health and human science programs
