The University of Portland seeks a visionary Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences who is committed to the future of the liberal arts, including the humanities and arts as well as the natural and social sciences, and can envision and operationalize dynamic and progressive interdisciplinary partnerships within the College and across a small comprehensive Catholic university with four professional schools.  The University seeks a leader who is dedicated to advancing diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice efforts and is committed to the internationalization of the University. It seeks a leader with integrity who is mission-driven and action-oriented with collaborative, innovative, and ethical leadership values and skills.

Requirements: The successful candidate will possess: 1) Ph.D. or Terminal Degree in an academic discipline within the College; 2) a record of scholarship, teaching, and service commensurate with the rank of professor; 3) minimum 3 yrs. of experience in higher education leadership; 4) an ability to articulate the University’s Catholic, Holy Cross mission and its compatibility with their approach to leadership; faculty teaching, scholarship and service; and student intellectual and personal development/ formation; 5) an ability to articulate and implement a collaborative vision for the liberal arts in the 21st century, particularly in the context of a Catholic comprehensive university with a liberal arts core; 6) demonstrated lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice work within or transferable to higher education; 7) an ability to represent the College and University to various on/off-campus constituents; 8) a demonstrated understanding of the U.S. higher education landscape and opportunities and challenges therein; and 9) supervisory experience of faculty and/or staff in a higher education context. Application Process: Qualified applicants should submit: 1) a cover letter/narrative explaining your interest in and fitness for the position, 2) an explanation of your leadership philosophy, and (3) a curriculum vitae.  The cover letter should include your understanding of the University’s Catholic, Holy Cross mission, your experience in DEI & J work, and your vision for the liberal arts in the 21st century.  Quarterfinalists will be asked to submit four references and to participate in a simulation exercise. Semi-finalist interviews will be conducted over Zoom.  Finalists will be asked to visit UP for two days of search committee activities.
