Augustana University seeks a distinguished leader for the new position of Dean of the School of Health Professions. The Dean will provide visionary direction to the newly founded School and help advance it to achieve a regional and national reputation for educational excellence. Among others, the Dean’s objectives are to oversee established academic programs, to guide and facilitate enrollment growth, to develop and deliver entrepreneurial, ground-breaking curricula, to cultivate partnerships in the community and throughout the multi-state region, to exercise strong fiscal management, and to provide visionary, 21st-century leadership that aligns with the University’s mission, its core values, and the Viking Bold: Journey to 2030 strategic plan. 

Reporting to the Provost and serving on the President’s Council, the Dean will be accountable for the quality of the School’s academic programs and numerous partnerships. As one who understands well the value of the liberal arts, the transformational nature of experiential learning, the critical role of research, and the unquestionable benefits of effective and caring instruction, the Dean will be a strong proponent for academic excellence in all existing and eventual health sciences degrees, pathways, and certificate programs. In collaboration with campus and community stakeholders, the Dean will provide support to health-related programs in such areas as nursing, medical laboratory sciences, athletic training, exercise science, and physical therapy. In addition, the Dean will support and help to create opportunities for numerous existing pre-health professional offerings, including chiropractic, dentistry, mortuary science, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, and physician assistant care.

Poised for growth through the addition of a hybrid doctoral program in physical therapy based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, and a bundle of new and innovative graduate nursing programs at the main campus in Sioux Falls, SD, the School of Health Professions aspires to expand and evolve in ways that meet the dynamic, ever-changing, high-demand needs of our community and region, our strategic partners, and our changing student body. The University thus seeks a leader who has prior and practical experience in the healthcare field in order to fully nurture and facilitate relationships and place-based opportunities such as clinical experiences, research projects, and service learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualifications: Doctorate in a health-professions field and experience as an administrator in higher education required. Evidence of successful university teaching and research work appropriate to a profession is necessary, and candidates who are licensed nurses with relevant clinical and teaching experiences will be preferred. Demonstrated expertise in managing the financial, academic and research activity of an academic program preferred. Successful experience in fundraising desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative and academic leadership for the School of Health Profession as Augustana implements its Viking Bold: The Journey to 2030 strategic plan.
  • Enhance the visibility, enrollment, and community/regional impact offered by the University and the School of Health Professions by forging relationships with local/regional constituents and stakeholders.
  • Provide visionary leadership for the School in developing and defining progressive and innovative programs to lead students into the future of health professions.
  • Support and promote the research programs and scholarship of the faculty.
  • Teach in area of specialization, as necessary.
  • Represent the School of Health Professions on executive committees of the University.
  • Evaluate and define staffing needs to support the infrastructure of the School and make appropriate hires as needed that are in adherence to the operating budget.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff within the School as well as promote an atmosphere of collegiality and open communication. This includes conflict resolution, innovative ideas, brainstorming, and general teambuilding.
  • Develop and oversee programs in license-certified fields that capitalize on faculty strengths and address current needs and trends in relevant professional disciplines.
  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development ensuring that standards are maintained for course objectives, course content, examinations and grading.
  • Support adoption, acquisition, and implementation of appropriate new technologies.
  • Lead the development of hybrid and online instructional programs throughout the School and respond creatively to emerging technical challenges within the field of health care; examples of such challenges include but are not limited to tele-health and e-health.
  • Build relationships with clinical sites and make strategic visits throughout the year.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Provost.
