Job Description:

The Director of Counseling manages the staff and operations of the University Counseling Center (UCC), and collaborates with staff of the Student Health Center (SHC) and Office of Health Promotion (OHP). These three offices comprise Student Health and Counseling (SH&C) services for W&L students, and are part of the Division of Student Affairs. The Director supervises the clinical and administrative support staff of UCC, and is responsible for UCC staffing, clinical services, programming, training, budget, policies/procedures, and adherence to professional, legal and ethical standards. The Director provides counseling, consultation, outreach and urgent response services to W&L students in support of the mission of SH&C, the Division of Student Affairs and the University. This is a full-time, 11-month position (August through June each academic year).

Essential Functions:
  • Manages the staff and operations of the University Counseling Center (UCC). Provides leadership for mission, needs assessment, strategic planning/goal setting, program evaluation, direct clinical services, outreach programming and training by UCC. Supervises and manages professional staff and administrative support staff, including performance review and feedback. Ensures effective practices for triage, intake, scheduling and documentation of individual clinical encounters, therapy and support groups. Establishes on-call schedule and shares on-call responsibility with other UCC clinicians for 24/7 counselor availability for urgent/emergency needs during the academic year. Manages UCC budget. Supports professional development/continuing education for UCC clinicians based on program goals. Provides periodic and annual analysis and reporting on UCC program, operations, clinical utilization, strategic plan and goals.
  • Manages a multidisciplinary UCC team of behavioral health professionals that provides counseling, psychological and psychiatry services to W&L students. Provides direct clinical services to students for assessment and treatment as appropriate to clinical training and licensure. Provides case management consultation and support for UCC clinicians working with high-needs students and/or through care transitions. Facilitates regular peer consultation among UCC providers, and with Student Health Center medical providers. Consults with students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents and off-campus professionals regarding the needs of individual students. Facilitates timely response to urgent requests for psychological intervention during regular office hours, after-hours and for phone consultation only during break periods in the academic calendar.
  • Attends meetings of the multidisciplinary Assessment and Care Team (ACT). Collaborates as needed with University officials in situations requiring emergency management and/or behavioral threat assessment and intervention. Provides UCC review and recommendations for student withdrawal, leaves of absence, reinstatements and/or short-term academic adjustments. Coordinates UCC review and recommendations for student disability accommodations requests for mental health conditions (other than neurodevelopmental disabilities reviewed by an outside consultant).
  • Coordinates outreach activities, training and other programs requested of/provided by UCC to the University community.
  • Coordinates and supports clinical practicum, internship, and/or fellowship placements at UCC for professional students and post-degree trainees.
  • Oversees advising and support for student organizations affiliated with UCC, such as the Peer Counselor program and the Campus Recovery Program.
  • Represents the UCC mission, services and key issues within Student Health & Counseling, Student Affairs and the University community. Promotes and participates in activities, committees, events, programs and other efforts that serve to improve the health and well-being of W&L students.
  • Participates in appropriate continuing education and professional development and training activities to maintain licensure, clinical competency, and enhance knowledge and skills in areas pertinent to the position. Facilitates appropriate continuing education and professional development and training activities for all other UCC staff to meet the psychological and mental healthcare needs of students.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Master's or doctoral degree in Psychology, Counseling or Social Work. Professional licensure by the Virginia Board of Health Professions, or license eligible in Virginia with completion of licensure within 12 months. Must have at least three years of pertinent clinical and management experience. Knowledge and experience in the psychological and developmental needs of the college student population are essential. Excellent clinical, supervisory, management, interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills are essential.

Working Conditions:

The worker is exposed to infectious diseases.

Types of Work:

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The Counseling Center business hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-5 PM. The position also requires being on call nights and weekends, and occasional evening/weekend work duties.
