George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government invites applications for a Director of Marketing position. The Schar School is based on the Arlington and Fairfax campuses of George Mason University and serves 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with approximately 16,000 alumni. This position is located on the Arlington campus. The Schar School prepares undergraduate and graduate students to be leaders and managers who solve problems and advance the public good in the private, non-profit, and public sectors, including all levels of government—in the United States and throughout the world.

The Director of Marketing develops a strategic and integrated marketing plan that differentiates the Schar School from its competitors; promotes the School’s brand; and enhances its reputation as a preeminent school for policy, government, and international affairs in the Washington, D.C. region and beyond. The primary responsibility of the Director is to lead Schar School marketing efforts, including digital strategies, in support of student recruitment to increase enrollment for the academic programs. The Director works collaboratively with the Communications Manager and the Director of Graduate Admissions, and reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.


Additional duties include:

  • Develop and execute a fully integrated branding, marketing, and advertising strategy to promote brand awareness and increase inquiries and interest at the top of the enrollment funnel for undergraduate and graduate academic program marketing efforts;
  • Oversee the content strategy and continued optimizations of the Schar School website, collaborating with the communications, marketing, admissions, and website teams to ensure content is fresh and relevant, and coordinate with the web specialist to address any technical issues and optimize content for improved performance; 
  • Design and implement a multi-channel advertising strategy, including paid search campaigns, paid social media advertising, search engine optimization (SEO), display advertising, email marketing (external and internal via the Salesforce TargetX CRM), native advertising, outdoor advertising, radio advertising, and other channels; 
  • Oversee the art direction and copywriting for all Schar School advertisements, marketing materials, website, signage, and related marketing vehicles and manage the production of new print and digital marketing collateral;
  • Quickly and effectively write marketing material, including emails, pamphlets, brochures, and web copy;
  • Manage the Schar School marketing budget and oversee the advertising buys, vendor relations, flighting schedule, contracts, invoicing, and asset management of a multi-channel marketing and advertising campaign;
  • Lead the email marketing strategy at the top of the enrollment funnel, including email copy and design, campaign planning, report testing and queuing, and communication flow management;
  • Manage the marketing team consisting of the Schar School web specialist, marketing coordinator, and freelancers;
  • Track key performance metrics for marketing and advertising campaigns, as well as website traffic.


Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience required; 
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in marketing and communications; 
  • Thorough knowledge of marketing and communications best practices, including branding;
  • Demonstrated project and budget management skills; 
  • Experience in developing and implementing a strategic marketing plan; 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, and the ability to write both marketing copy and articles in a journalistic/AP style;
  • Experience working with websites and content management systems, to include designing and creating content for a website and structuring a website for maximum effectiveness;
  • Experience tracking and mining analytics to inform business decisions. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education marketing; 
  • Experience with Salesforce TargetX Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System.
