POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE POSITION IN SPATIO-TEMPORAL VEGETATION DYNAMICS

Florida International University's Freshwater Resource Division at the Institute of Environment is seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Associate position in the area of Spatio-temporal Vegetation Dynamics.

The postdoctoral scholar will work on spatio-temporal vegetation dynamics in the context of the Everglades wetlands, where one of the world's largest wetland restoration projects is underway. As a part of the restoration's monitoring and assessment program, vegetation structure and composition data have been collected throughout the system to assess the responses to natural and/or management-induced changes in hydrology, fire regime, nutrient fluxes, and other disturbances. It is expected that the post-doctoral scholar will analyze long-term (>10 years) vegetation data that has been collected in the ridge and slough and marl prairie landscapes so critical to restoration of the freshwater Everglades, and interpret these analyses for publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and to provide feedback to resource managers. He/she will have opportunities to develop his/her own project, to network with Everglades researchers and restoration planners, and to interact with graduate students in the South Florida Terrestrial Ecosystem Lab (SOFTEL) and the FIU-based Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) LTER.

Candidates for the position must have a PhD in plant community ecology or a closely related field. Strong skills in spatial data analysis and modeling of vegetation dynamics are required. The candidate should have extensive practical experience in management of large datasets, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and analysis of plant community data using R' and other relevant community data analysis software. The candidate should also have a demonstrated record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, proven communication skills for presentation at scientific meetings and the ability to work within project deadlines in a team environment.

The postdoctoral scholar will work with Dr. Jay Sah at Florida International University (FIU). The position will be based in South Florida Terrestrial Ecology Lab (SOFTEL) at Florida International University. The position is available for 1 year with a starting date of 09/01/2021 with potential for renewal for a second-year contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply to Job Opening ID 524683 at facultycareers.fiu.edu and attach a cover letter, three letters of references, and CV as a single pdf file. Interested candidates should also send an email with a single PDF containing 1) a cover letter describing their research interest, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) three letters of references, and 4) three or more representative reprints to Dr. Jay Sah (sahj@fiu.edu). Please use Vegetation Dynamics Postdoc + [your last name] in the subject line in your email.
