The School of Social Transformation, an interdisciplinary unit at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar position in the Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology.

The Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology (CGEST) is a research center  at ASU that aims to create an interdisciplinary, ethnically diverse community of scholars, students, policy makers, and practitioners. CGEST is housed within the School of Social Transformation (SST), a transdisciplinary school unique to ASU that brings together interdisciplinary fields to integrate the study of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nation

The Postdoc will work in collaboration with CGEST faculty to conduct research projects that      further CGEST’s mission. The postdoc will be matched with a mentor for help in professional development and be expected to supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate student researchers. Most postdocs are funded from one or a few extramural grants, and they contribute to the design, writing, and leadership of new funding proposals. The postdoc will focus on conducting research, writing and submitting research manuscripts for peer review, submitting grant proposals, and presenting research at professional conferences. They are expected to submit at least one first-authored manuscript and three conference abstracts for peer review per year. They will also attend CGEST staff and research meetings and contribute to the intellectual life of the department in preparation for later career stages. Specific tasks depend on particular project assignments, and can include or vary across: qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, project management, developing K-12 programming, organizing conferences or workshops, etc.  If desired, the postdoc will have opportunities for teaching, and for becoming an assistant research professor (non-TT) who pursues extramural funding.

In addition to the general responsibilities listed above, this position will focus in particular on:

  • Mixed methods analyses of data collected from a large STEM equity education program implemented across a dozen Arizona high schools
  • Drafting and publishing peer-reviewed publications from those analyses
  • Presenting results at international scholarly conferences
  • Developing grant proposals to continue the program into future years
  • Developing and curating Institutional Review Board applications and modifications

The initial appointment is made on a fiscal year, full-time, appointment for one year with subsequent annual renewal based upon satisfactory performance and availability of resources. This position is a benefits-eligible appointment with no tenure implications.  The anticipated start date is January, 2022. This position comes with a competitive salary, health insurance coverage and includes $2,000 for travel/research.  Candidates must be within five years from receipt of their doctoral degree. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. by time of appointment preferably in computer science education (CSE) with expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy. Other relevant fields include STEM Education and Technology; Family, African, African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Chicana/o Studies; Sociology; Science and Technology Studies, Women and Gender Studies and/or Psychology.
  • Ability to conduct mixed methods research with a deep understanding of at least two of the following: culturally responsive teaching, culturally responsive computing, intersectionality as a critique of structural inequalities, and gender equity in STEM.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills
  • An interest in publishing and presenting at national and international conferences desired.
