Professor (all ranks) in Algal Technology and Energy Futures

Location: Arizona State University – Tempe Campus and Polytechnic Campus

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SEBE) seek applicants for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in the area of Algae Biotechnology and Energy/Water Futures. SEBE, which is one of the seven Fulton Schools, houses a vibrant civil and bio-inspired engineering research community (Learn more at We seek applicants who complement our abilities in these areas to solve grand challenges as part of a community of experts.

Successful applicants will have an affiliation with the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) laboratories and outdoor cultivation testbed located at the ASU Polytechnic Campus. AzCATI is a major ASU asset closely affiliated with SEBE. AzCATI scientists develop and utilize algae technology to produce renewable energy, food, feed and other valuable products, while performing environmental services such as wastewater treatment to support resource recovery for a more sustainable future.

Particular areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, synthetic biology in support of production of bio-products and renewable energy. Applicants who have synthetic biology experience with extremophiles, such as red microalgae, are particularly encouraged to apply as these algae grow readily on a wide variety of feedstocks and wastewaters. Applications from individuals with synthetic biology experience using other scalable and genetically tractable microalgae are also welcome.

We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the University achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses in their respective Fulton Engineering School, mentor both undergraduate and graduate students, and undertake service activities.

This search is part of ASU’s engagement with the Arizona’s New Economy Initiative (NEI), a bold effort to ensure that Arizona leads the new economy that will rely on engineering, computing, and technology to drive sustainable growth, resilience, and opportunities for all. NEI investments in the Fulton Schools of Engineering will grow our world class faculty to accelerate research outcomes and to broaden student access to our programs; will establish Science and Technology Centers to foster the growth of new economy Industries; and will expand experiential learning and workforce training opportunities.
