Job Description

The Food Science and Technolgy Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead and support activities at our advanced molecular food characterization laboratory. The candidate will support targeted or global-metabolomics, sensory, flavor related research by developing and executing new quantitative and profiling workflows, instrumental analysis, and data interpretation. In addition to service projects (50% of time commitment), the candidate would have ample opportunity to lead innovative, independent research projects in food characterization (50% of time commitment).

-Lead method development efforts for advanced molecular food characterization encompassing bioactive food molecules and their metabolites, volatile compounds, among others.

-Provide technical and analytical support, and staff training and supervision as needed, in collaboration with food science faculty using the facility.

-Train graduate students on instrumentation, data processing, and data analysis.

-Lead and coordinate lab activities, including scheduling, parts and supplies requisition, access, safety and compliance, among others as instructed by department head.

-Operate high-resolution mass spectrophotometers coupled with gas chromatographs.

-Perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment as needed to keep them in optimal working condition.

-Perform record keeping and quality assurance activities to maintain laboratory certification.

-Prepare safety and equipment use manuals and analytical methods as needed.

-Participate in grant writing, and collaborative research activities leading to peer reviewed publications.

-Other duties as required.

Required Education and Experience:
-Bachelors degree in food science or closely related field.
-Seven years' experience in advanced food analysis including at least two years of related supervisory experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

- PhD in food science or closely related field with appropriate experience in advanced food analysis, and a track record of publishing in peer reviewed journals. Experience with grant writing.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

-Knowledge of use and maintenance of digital data.
-Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

-Effective verbal and written communication skills.

-Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Ability to develop innovative methods for advanced complex food matrix characterization.

-Ability to take on leadership responsibilities and influence research direction of the department.

-Ability to perform preventive maintenance, and trouble-shooting and minor repairs on high-end laboratory equipment, including LC-MS/MS, and GC-MS.

-Strong scientific writing and data analysis ability.

-Attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines.
