The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Registered Nurse I to serve as a member of the Coastal Bend Health Education Center, diabetes education team. We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. Job Summary: Provide diabetes education instructions and initial assessment of health education class participants including vital signs and lab tests; assists in maintaining State Department of Health records as required.

Required Education:
  • Must be licensed by the State of Texas as a Registered Nurse (RN)
Required Licenses and Certifications:
  • Licensed RN and CPR certified. American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) Diabetes Paraprofessional Level 2 certification, or able to successfully complete the Diabetes Paraprofessional Level 2 certification within three months of employment.
Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Knowledge of standard nursing procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to use and manage an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Verifiable good driving record and reliable transportation.
Preferred Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
Preferred Experience:
  • Three (3) years in the above with college health nursing, public health, or ER experience.
  • Direct patient care experience as an LVN or RN within the past two (2) years.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
  • Certified Diabetes Educator
Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Strong ability to work with diverse low-income population.
  • Security-Sensitive position and finalist subject to a criminal history background check.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities
Responsibilities:
  • Provide diabetes self-management education/support, develops individualized education and support plan, focuses on behavior change and monitor quarterly progress thru Professional Nursing Standards
  • Documents, and maintains class participants education records, asses and re-assess education and health care needs, provides services as needed
  • Performs a comprehensive assessment and reassessments, including baseline diabetes self-management knowledge, skills and readiness for behavior change, collects biometric data that includes blood pressure, heart rate, weight, BMI, Body fat percentage, blood glucose, and hemoglobin A1c (HBA1c)
  • Maintain and operates biometric equipment for initial assessment and quarterly re-assessmments
  • Collaborates with referring providers or health care professionals outside of the DSMES service regarding education plan or education provided and outcomes
  • Assumes responsibilities for various assigned education locations, includes travel
  • Maintains inventory of medical lab supplies and equipment
  • Provides preventive education programs to the community and students
  • Provides ( House Bill 984) train school employees who are not licensed healthcare professionals in the care of elementary and secondary school students with diabetes
  • Provides oversight of support staff
  • Other duties as assigned
