The Veteran Benefits Specialist administers VA educational benefits as a school certifying official (SCO) and submits enrollment certifications for the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and Military Tuition Assistance benefits. The Specialist advises current and prospective military-affiliated students in attaining military educational benefits and assists other University offices with interpretation and application of military benefit policies and regulations. The position is responsible for maintenance of military-affiliated student records. Duties include:
Department of Veteran Affairs - School Certifying Official
Conducts student enrollment audits and processes student enrollment certifications with the VA only reporting course hours that are applicable to the student's degree program(s); monitors academic standing and reports to VA when a student is placed on academic probation, suspension, or dismissal; reports to VA the net cost for in-state tuition and fees after the application of any waiver, scholarship, financial aid, etc.; responds to inquiries regarding VA benefits via phone, email, and in-person to ensure timely and high-quality customer service; assesses enrollment issues that impact enrollment certifications and works with department and/or students to determine an appropriate resolution, if applicable (i.e. registration changes, petitions, withdrawals, grade changes, etc.); reviews and researches federal regulations, manuals, and guidelines to stay current on issues affecting veterans' education; assures VA students' record up-keep; processes primary school concurrent/supplement enrollment requests for VA students; serves as the secondary liaison between VA students and the Department of Veterans Affairs regarding educational benefits; and advises other University offices especially Admissions, Financial Aid, Records, Bursars, Advisement, Mocs One Center, and Military Science Department of VA educational policies and regulations.
Records Maintenance & Customer Services
Provides customer service in Veteran Student Services to students, faculty, staff, and others; ensures appropriate VA entitlement documentation is obtained from student; processes Undergraduate program changes requests for VA students; and processes Undergraduate petitions for VA students.
Military Tuition Assistance Benefits
Processes Federal Military Tuition Assistance grades and graduation; updates TA portals programs and courses; processes State Military Tuition Assistance enrollment certification and forms; and enters ROTC cadet grades.
Participates in department, campus and community events, and conferences; assists during orientation, veteran/military appreciation events and programs; assists during peak periods or in absence of VSS staff; and other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Knowledge of advanced computer support systems for data management and the ability to apply new technologies

- Excellent administrative, organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills
- Ability to identify and resolve complex problems
- Must be able to work independently and can adapt quickly, assimilate, and apply new information

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree; 3 years of work experience in a professional setting; advanced Records management experience; and experience interpreting and explaining office policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced experience working in a high volume multifaceted environment; minimum of two years related work experience in a post-secondary enrollment services or student affairs office, preferably working with veterans benefits in a higher education setting; 1 year of experience as a VA certifying official at a college or university; Banner, DegreeWorks, VAONCE or related software systems experience; and thorough knowledge of Veterans educational benefits including Veterans, Active Duty, Reserves, National Guard, and dependent education benefits.
