The Department currently has 10 full-time and additional part-time faculty serving approximately 200 undergraduate majors.

About the Position

The Department of Communication Studies at Western Washington University (WWU) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor with a 1-year renewable teaching position in Communication Studies starting September 16, 2021. Renewal is contingent upon budget approval from the university. We seek a communication scholar who can teach Intercultural and Small Group Communication at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will also be expected to fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students. The successful candidate may also be asked to teach existing undergraduate courses, including some combination of Communication Diversity & Controversy, Communication Identity & Difference, Communication Theory, Communication & Healthcare, Interpersonal Communication, Communication & Conflict, as well as other classes as needed. The teaching load is 6-8 courses per academic year on a 10-week quarter system (i.e., teaching at least 2 courses in each of three quarters per year).

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or ABD in communication studies or a related field
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the college or the university level
  • Ability to teach intercultural communication.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating learning and working environments that are equitable and inclusive of students, faculty, and staff with diverse social identities and backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to teach interpersonal and small group communication and communication theory courses.
